HAHAHAHAHA

Great quote from the Sen form New York today..
speaking about Mahatma Gandhi, she quipped "He ran a gas station down in St. Louis."

Others have described Gandhi, who through non-violent means helped establish India as an independant country, as follows:
"Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth." - Albert Einstein
"He lived, thought and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

attaboy Hillary...insulting the entire population of the second largest country in the world!

i think hillary has watched to many Simpsons episodes.

So anyone who insults Martin Luther King is insulting the entire black population of the US? While I'm no Hillary fan, just WTF is your reasoning? Or did you just feel the need to try and bash a Clinton?

BTW, this is a repost. If you hadn't spent the two minutes google-ing the population of India you might have been first.

I believe if the insult was in the form of a racial stereotype, that yes, the overwhelming majority of Black Americans would be justifiably appalled. Are you saying you wouldn't be?

I didn't know that quoting somebody was "bashing" them.

I spent the time looking up the other quotes (but you where right about using Google, you got one out of three right))

Do right-wingers ever tire of Clinton bashing? I guess diversionary tactics are quite useful when somebody like Bush is given the keys...

I believe this was actually news...and the actual topic of the thread. Now if the topic was Clinton and someone came in and starting spouting about Bush...well then that would be a diversion.

let's for a moment assume that Dick Cheney had called Gandhi a mini-mart attendant....
can you imagine the outrage and invectives the liberals would heap upon him...

Damn, she could've atleast called him a programmer in Silicon Valley or a Call Center Rep in Bangalore :|

Bill Clinton's very popular in India though. Hillary should take lessons from him on how to talk in public.

Not funny.

Would'nt surprise if her true feelings about brown people slipped out. Most people are racist they just don'y usually make public gaffs because of PC fine tuning over the decades.

Hillary isn't a racist and nothing "slipped out." She just has someone with an incredibly lame sense of humor helping her write her speeches. She should have realized that making a joke like that would wind up sounding incredibly dumb, but things happen and she didn't. Hopefully she'll learn from this and won't need to be embarrassed by making a similar mistake in the future.

You mean like if I point out that when it comes to insulting the people of the world, Bush-lite still leads Hillary by about five to one?

The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser in St Louis on Saturday. During an event for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying: ?He ran a gas station down in St Louis.?

After laughter from many in the crowd of at least 200 subsided, the former first lady continued, ?No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th century.? In a nod to Farmer?s underdog status against Republican Senator Kit Bond, Mrs Clinton quoted the Indian independence leader as saying: ?First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.?

the context you left out on purpose. intellectually dishonest tactic of the likes of coulter and limbaugh. it was a joke because it was an absurd thing to say. and she knew her audience would know it was absurd. if they agreed, it wouldn't be funny.

How come when Trent Lott does it it's a sin that needs to be punishable by death, but when Hillary does it's just a bad joke?

That would constitute the old "well xxx is 'worstester'" diversion - yes.

can't see the difference between that joke that states ghandi was a great man, and saying that we would have been better under one of the chief advocates of segregation ever? and an extreme hipocrite at that, in a speech cried ?I want to tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there?s not enough troops in the Army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the n*gger race into our theatres, into our swimming pools, into our homes and into our churches.? after impregnating his 16 year old house n*gger. thats the man that lott admired. if you can't, you are blind to all reason.

They'll never understand, sir; in their eyes, you are just a "basher" when your remarks are directed toward "their guy."

context matters? of course. esp context which is purposely left out.

say she said the remark in a speech decrying all indians as ragheads stealing our jobs and flooding us with curry. would that change anything compared to what she did say after in reality? After laughter from many in the crowd of at least 200 subsided, the former first lady continued, ?No, Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader of the 20th century.? In a nod to Farmer?s underdog status against Republican Senator Kit Bond, Mrs Clinton quoted the Indian independence leader as saying: ?First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.?

bad joke yes.
hillary is a racist no.

I would have gauged by your laughter, that perhaps you got the joke. I guess you're just a humorless little partisan hack, aren't you? I seem to recall Republicans claiming the joke exemption when Jeb Bush was assailed by gays/lesbians on his quote that "the people of San Francisco are an endangered species."

your right..
tastless, racists comments just take on a more lighthearted, forgivable tone when uttered by someone as
pure of heart as the Senator from New York.

CNN linky

"The director of a U.S. center devoted to Gandhi's teachings called the remarks stereotypical and racially insensitive, while an educator said the flap underscored the need for politicians to be cautious when trying to get laughs.

"Political speeches can't be like episodes of The Simpsons," said David Robertson, a University of Missouri-St. Louis political science professor"

Naef said. "To be generous to her, I would say it was a poor attempt at humor. Perhaps I'm overly sensitive, but I find it offensive when people use stereotypes in that way."

Clinton said in a two-sentence statement. "I truly regret if a lame attempt at humor suggested otherwise."

OK cool, so racist jokes are OK with liberals. Just so we're straight on that.

You know what's funny? The reaction of the people whom this joke insults:

From the SF Gate link posted by Gonad:

"The director of a U.S. center devoted to Gandhi's teachings said the remarks amounted to stereotyping and were insensitive."

Yeah, he could barely contain his laughter.
