The only person I know who would seem to meet the ATOT definition of a hipster is a guy in his fifties who spends big bucks on a wardrobe carefully considered to make himself look like a street person.

I don't quite understand the Pabst reference when people talk about hipsters. All the hipsters I know or see, seem to be uppity about their beer, like they are about music. They either brew their own or they go out of their way to find beer nobody else has heard of.

A lot of hipsters, especially in college (read: poor), drink PBR because they consider it to be higher quality than coors, bud, natty, etc.

Good point, I guess it has been a while since I have been a part of the college scene.

The hipster subculture seems to be on the way out here in the UK. I'm not sure what's replacing it, maybe the vintage clothing trend that seems really popular?

eh? they intentionally drink it because one would expect someone with their refined palette and financial wherewithal to be drinking something of much greater provenance than miller-brewed $1 PBR. it's called irony. and it's what drives every decision by a hipster.

That's how I always understood it. PBR is considered cheap blue collar swill so it's ironic that an upper-middle class youth with disposable income would be drinking it. I suspect this is the same reason why Larry the Cable Guy is a celebrity.

The hipster is all about irony. The beauty of them is they'll never admit to being one. That would be admitting that they conform to something, despite the fact that they all act and dress the same. Sort of an interesting social phenomenon. They evolved out of the beatnik and mod scenes. Each generation has their own version of it: Swing kids in the 30s and 40s, greasers and beatnicks in the 50s, mods and hippies in the 60s and 70s, punks and hip-hop in the 80s, grunge and goth in the 90s, emo in the 2000s, hipster in the 2010s.

Sub-cultures help move culture progress but also reflect society at the time. Hipsters are a reflection of two things: the entitlement of their yuppie parents, and the phoniness of corporate controlled pop culture. In other words, we made the hipster and they're lashing out at their creators.

Now you are making me hungry. You need to try some sort of crazy hijinx out of an 80's movie that will drive all the hipsters away. What do hipsters hate most?

Hipsters are driving the resurgence of several neighborhoods just outside downtown Cleveland. There is a renewed desire for urban living. The number of brew pubs and local restaurants that opened over the last few years is incredible.

People are moving back into the city for the first time in a long time. New and rehabbed houses are hitting the market in areas you wouldn't be caught dead driving through at night as recent as 5 years ago. So it's not all bad.

Monster_Munch: I think the fad that will follow after hipsters will be a hip-hipsterism. E.g. hipsters so fed up with "hipsters" that they will try to mock this entire subculture... I don't even want to know what they will do or how they will look.

I'm cool with them, I love groups that burn up their cash trying to be cool. Moves us all up in the class ladder through attrition.

They are harmless but their elitist and douchebag attitude is what mainly makes me despise them. And it seems they try way too hard to dress different but they end up looking pretty much the same. Basically, they need to be nuked from orbit.

Let's do an examination of the hipster as a species. What do their parents look like. Well, they're yuppies. Traits of the homo yuppie: middle class, materialistic, elitist, self righteous, self centred, conformist. Your typical yuppie is clean cut, drives a BMW, is politically centre, values a cookie-cutter lifestyle, and values people by material possessions they own. Modern pop culture is heavily driven by this species. A culture created to be bland, uniform, and inoffensive.

The hipster is an evolution of the yuppie rather than a revolution counter culture. Out of the core traits, homo hipster has evolved to reject materialism and conformity. However they still retain the self righteousness, self-centrism, and elitism of the earlier species. These two changes have greatly shaped their species to be fundamentally similar to the yuppie while being completely different at the same time. The beauty of evolution at work!

Hipsters reject materialism by embracing anti-materialism. They prefer to shop at mom & pop stores, thrift stores, buy bargain brands despite having the wealth to afford higher end items. It's homo hipster is lashing out at his environment that has surrounded him with meaningless acquisition. He seeks the "authentic", yet the hunt is an endless search. Every movie, music, book he sees is all the same corporate drivel. He rejects anything as soon as it becomes "mainstream". So instead he embraces the ironic. To reject conformism, he never identifies himself as being a member of his species. As doing so would be admitting to conforming to the pack. The hipster attempts to be a solitary creature but finds comfort in other members of his species.

He values himself and others on how ironic he can be, and uses this to attract a mate. Rather than living lavishly, it is a race to the bottom. He attempts to emulate the related species homo homeless in order to attract a female hipster. The more ironic, the better his chances.

Yet he still retains the elitism of his yuppie ancestors. He looks down on homo sapiens who sadly do not share his species' traits. Politically, he is paternalistic and left wing, believing that inferior homo sapiens should serve him and his compatriots through lavish tribute and a free liberal arts education.

Yet the hipster finds difficulty conforming to his environment. He cannot obtain work due to his disheveled appearance and slow, sloth like movement. Large numbers of idle hipsters are known to convene at large gatherings known in the scientific world as Occupys. In these gatherings they will vent their frustrations with mainstream society as a group. However such events do not last long as the hipster has a genetic defect that leads them predisposed to attention deficit disorder.

The homo hipster is a truly vulnerable species that deserves our protection. We are creating a habitat and nature preserve for them known as San Francisco, where they can live in their natural element free from harassment from human influence.
