Hi, I just got that $200 dollar HIS 6950 at newegg, installed it.

It boots up 100%/4800 RPMs , I clean install included disk drivers 11-2's, cant control fan auto or manual in CCC or TRIX, or Afterburner.

I then uninstalled 11-2's and installed 11-3's same problems. Uninstalled and tried 11-4 s , the fan will not spin down 4800 rpms of agony for over an hour.

Has anyone jumped on this so called deal and had a good experience ...

I think it is a crappy bios from HIS . I wont be using this card needless to say

Thanks

Install Afterburner and see if you can manually bring the fan speed down to say about 30%. Check if the fan RPM goes down, if it doesn't change anything it may be a faulty card/fan/BIOS.

He said in the OP that he couldn't control it with Afterburner.

CrystalBay, what are your temps like? What does Afterburner or GPU-Z say about your card (anything odd)? If you extract your BIOS with GPU-Z and take a peek at it with Radeon Bios Editor, does it have a normal fan profile?

MRK6 thanx , gpuz was saying 30 percent same as ccc . Unfortunately it I did not bother extracting the bios info ,nor will I tonight at least.

I have a nice 6850 thats silent and I can't imagine putting this HIS card back in tonight, at least. Weekend I may try again , No RMA shipping options really till Monday .

I know they use some crappy sleeve bearing fan and cheap non reference components at this price.

The thing was howling for75 minutes ,through clean driver changes, I cant take any more now.

oh a couple of times it shifted down to prolly 30% for a brief 2-3 seconds ,like loading Metro 2033 shaders but then shot back up to 4860 rpm's

I'll try some more Tshootin tomorrow, It wouldn't surprise me though if It's a driver issue.

thanx guys

I have the same card that just arrived (not sending in rebate yet in case they want the card back)

My card is nice and quiet until I play a game for 30+ seconds. Then she goes to 100% (or at least super loud) and doesn't come back down until 30 seconds of being out of the game. The air coming out the back is NOT hot, barely warm. I'm not going to take it apart and thermal paste it with AS5 until I hear back from HIS support too. The card is nice one some quick benchmarks in Just Cause 2!

I can control mine in CC. But I don't want to cook it if there is a contact problem and I set the fan at 30% all the time. Plus I want it variable so I can keep overdrive off and save a ton of power when idle. I am using the newest drivers from ati as of 2 days ago!

I'm straight north of you up in North Dakota. Will be in Deadwood this summer

This is when she went nuts... The fan goes crazy but for no reason?
I saw your suggestions up there... here is my log from gpu-z:

Edit 5 (lol)
I looked up the bios settings in RBE. The fan graph looks fine. It should be at 40% at 60 or so degrees, so just like my table here shows... but the fan rpm goes way out of bounds.

ccc can't control fan speed once i hit 60*. flashing it does not help. I think it is time for a newegg return. Dang.

Anyone else have any info? HIS has not responded to me yet either.

Hi, I sent my card back Saturday . I'm out the restocking fee and shipping $43. I'm a lil pissed to say the least, defective card and all.

I cannot say I blame you. Did you find another card you are considering?

My XFX 5870 had similar behavior. As soon as it hit 65-69c Fan would go to Full speed. After Updating the BIOS it allowed the Temp to go to 75(ish)c and Fan never exceeds 50%. A simple change to the BIOS would probably fix this issue with your HIS Card(s).
