Are you sure you really want to quote a man who was a supporter of eugenics and the idea of "forced sterilization of the sick, unemployed, poor, criminals, prostitutes, and the disabled." ?

How about you answer in your own words next time, it means a lot more.
His words conveyed my feelings on that subject.

You implied that we should have many languages in this country. I think English should be primary and everyone should have to learn it. And if anyone feels this way you call them a xenophobe? I think you are mislabeling. I don't fear people who are different from me.

I don't wish to take away anyone's customs, traditions, language, but I do think when you become a citizen of the United States then English should not be a "foreign language" to you any more.

I don't understand it why some mexicans have such a hard time learning english. I'm filipino, and when my parents immigrated here back in the '70's, they made a point of only speaking English to us. They wanted us to "fit" in. I do regret that they didn't teach us tagalog though.
Seems a little excessive and short sited of them. You will always look Filipino you might as well speak it . Knowing other languages is not a bad thing. Do you speak any other language?
I have friends who speak all kinds of languages because they spoke them at home so they learned them for “fee” these languages become useful to some of them. There are numerous benefits to being able to speak languages. I have a friend who's parents spoke 2 different languages to him so he learned them as a child plus English at school and Spanish now he can speak all of them.

You obviously don't know many Hispanic people. They are thrilled if you attempt to speak Spanish. I have never once in my entire life met or talked to someone who was offended that I began speaking to them in English.

Most hispanic people that I know are really nice and have a good sense of humor. They may be blue collar and not make a lot of money but I find them to be good people. I've seen idiosyncrasies in all sorts of people that make them the odd bunch. I'm sure some trailer inhabitants are nice people but then you have the ones that we refer to as 'trash'.

But in reference to the OP's topic, I have also encountered some hispanic people who got offended when I did not speak spanish. But there are abnormalities in every race. It's something that will always be there and doesn't make one race or people superior to another.

Tell them to learn english and you wont have a problem. Dont stoop to their level.

What is they level?

Since when language is a social class?

remember back in the days when speaking Latin was consider a upper class language?

Hispanics get very offended if you look Hispanic and don't speak Spanish. I think it's ridiculous. They don't bother to learn the language but expect everyone to cater towards them. If you live in a country, you might want to learn the primary language there. My brother moved to Japan three years ago and didn't expect to not have to learn Japanese even though so many people speak English over there.

Wrong!!

Almost no one can speak english here.

But you can find many who can speak Spanish.

The stupid fuck canadian government does that. In the western parts of the country, stuff in federal government offices is always english and french, and you need to be bilingual in english and french to work there. You can tell how retarded this is by looking at signs put up by private businesses. While the government has french as the secondary language, banks will often have mandarin Chinese. Some places also have Polish or Ukrainian as the secondary language on their business signs. The prairie region has probably 100x as many Ukrainians and Poles as it has French, but the government insists French is important.
Hey, that was quite a rant there. You know, we're looking for an everyman to rant about petty nonsensical irritants to replace our "Spotlight on the Middle East" segment.

I think it shows a complete lack of respect for a place if you move to it then demand that the people there speak to you in your language and get offended if they don't. If I moved to France, I'm not going to expect everyone to speak English to me (even though most of them probably do); I'm going to make a concerted effort to learn the dominant language so that I can communicate effectively. It would be arrogant of me to assume that I would not need to change a single thing about myself when trying to fit into a new culture; why should I respect that behavior in other people coming to this country?

I'm fairly liberal, but I don't think it's in the least bit racist to expect that immigrants make some effort to learn English when they come to this country. It's what I would do if I were traveling overseas; they should extend me the same courtesy I would extend them.

You find it irritating that a country made up of immigrants doesn't feel the need to conform to one single language?

I find it irritating I have to share a country with xenophobes.

No what I find irritating is that in a country made up of immigrants who as late as the Vietnamese wave that arrived in the 1970's assimilated themselves into the culture within a generation after arrival that any criticism of the current wave not assimilating themselves is met with accusations of racism and xenophobia.

How effective can a country be, when it's citizens can't communicate with each other?

Language is one of the key ingredients in having a well integrated society. Sadly, it seems to me that a large portion of new immigrants are not here to be Americans. They are simply here to get whatever they can out of the "system", and remain loyal to their native country.

I have had people speak Spanish to me and get offended when I reply in English. I've also had people speak Farci to me, but they laugh when I reply in English. It's funny how one group consistently gets annoyed and the other finds it humorous.

I do wish they taught us the language. I still have family in the Philippines, and I do go visit every once in awhile. It would be great to speak to them in tagalog. I guess the timing may have had an influence on my parents decision way back then too. I have no problems with people being multi-lingual, but it bothers me when immigrants don't make the effort to learn english.

I did take German in highschool, 3 years worth. I wasn't fluent, but if I had more opportunities to speak it on a regular basis, I have no doubts I'd be pretty close. I'm actually trying to relearn some vocabulary right now because I'm going to Oktoberfest in September .

Yep, I look like your average Jose and I get the dirty look all the time when they find out I cannot understand them.

I also get the weird look when some white people find out I don't know Spanish. Then I ask them if they know German or Russian which most don't and that shuts them up.

If this is getting so many regular Americans pissed off lets just make English the official language and be done with it.

Why not? A couple days ago I said the government should release a bunch of meth and crack cocaine that is contaminated with something like ricin or cyanide because then all of the meth heads would die and I wouldn't need to deal with them.

If this is getting so many regular Americans pissed off lets just make English the official language and be done with it.
Can only do that on a government level. If some guy wants to start a business where the signs are all Italian and the people only speak Italian, that's their business. If a bank offers English and Spanish telephone services, that's their business.

True that. All my friends are Mexican and even with the hot girls, their moms are ughh.

if you sit around eating puposas all day, that's what happens. go to the gym and keep it tight, that won't happen.
My wife's salvadorian and in her 30's and races bikes too, she won't be looking like that, ever.

haha. this made my day. If I were hispanic I would demand you be killed right now.

nah you would say "mmm yea, thats about right, senor..."

im half messican, my german mom raised me tho so my broken espanol is from my dads side as well as working construction in AZ for years. while i can understand a ton of it, i rarely speak spanish unless i want to prove a point. like when i hear a couple making fun of me or someone else, ill tell them in spanish that some people choose english over spanish. that usually shuts them up for a while, and usually brings them around a bit.

ive never ran across any hispanics that get mad if "whiteys" speak spanish to them tho.

my family immigrated here in 1913 and learned the language. they get all pissy when they meet immigrants that refuse to learn english.

I hear you.

My gf is Colombian so whenever I go into a spanish/hispanic market, I get these weird looks. I tried being nice. I talk in Spanish, they hate me. I talk in English, they hate me. So, my gf just instructed me to go in the store and look at the floor.

Luckily, the Market Basket in Chelsea, MA now has all my Spanish grocery needs.

wuss...

Most everyone likes it when you try to speak their language, even if you butcher it. I've been learning some Punjabi, which I go around and use on every Punjab I encounter. They always react positively.

My problem is that my pronunciation and accent is really good (as I'm told), so some of them think I must be a lot more fluent than I actually am and will start talking at me in Punjabi. I only know about 20 words, the usual beginner stuff, so it always ends with me shrugging my shoulders and having a slightly embarrassed look, as if to say "Ummmmm....I don't understand that?"
