Hi

I bought a yamaha 5730 receiver and asb2 speakers

The sound quality is pretty good but I can hear a noticeble hissing sound. The sound gets louder when I turn up the volume on the receiver.

Is my receiver defective and should I exchange it for a new unit?

p.s I am using standard monster thx cable.

Gawd, another one sucked in.

Like Chris said, it's probably the source. Plug in a DVD or CD and you probably won't hear a lick of hiss.

Unless you get discounts on Monster Cable and get it for even less than that.

tips for emilinating noise (keep in mind some receivers are just crappy and have a lot of noise)

power - try directly to wall and hopefully on its circuit, other appliances/dimmers can cause noise
connection - keep power away from interconnects, generally not an issue though but a bad cable could be noisy

in the source - well nothing you can do about that, try different sources and see what happens. CDs and other sources do have noise in the recording - you could just be amplifying that.

if there is a noticible hiss at the listening position with the cd player paused then I'd say take it back. with the volume all the way up on an input and a few feet away from the speaker - that is normal. But not at your listening position.

I guess I should be praising Monster's marketing machine, instead of dissing their customers, but it's really no different than selling $30.00 USB cables to little old ladies. I guess if you can live with yourself, go for it!

The thing is, one of the first culprits the OP is worried about, is the cable. Talk about marketing hype! Have they done their job, or what?

The place I got it from only has monster cables
I have a giftcard there so I thought I could use it

Anyways, right now I have only connected my computer to the receiver using line out (analog ) connection

I am using my onboard sound but will probably get a better sound card once I have the money

However, even if I dont connect my receiver to any source, I can still hear the hissing sound
so I guess the problem is with my receiver eh?

0.7% THD @ 8 OHMS isn't great, but it shouldn't have hiss. If you change the input from tape, to DVD, to VCR or any other input, even without the device connected, and still have hiss, that ain't right. How high is the volume cranked?

Make sure you have the polarity on the speakers right.

Have all electronic devices (computer and such) powered off.

Listen to the hiss when switched to different sources. DISCONNECT the receiver from the compy.

Tell us what you hear.

the monster cables increased the sensitivity so much that it is picking up interference from your wires.

Bah, even two bit audio equipment sounds great today. You have no idea what we went through only a few years ago, struggling with tape hiss, record pops, scratches and hum. Even the best equipment could still be plagued with that crap.

Anyone remember anti-static guns?

I'll be the first to say that your computer is not going to make a good source without a 250+ dollar sound card.

And switching to an input that has nothing attached to it can be very noisy.

Try a decent source (CD/DVD) and pause and see if you still have hiss. If so then take back - or just take it back to your reliable dealer and have them bench it.

well with no sources the inputs are picking up and amplifying any EM noise you have. At 5+ db you are really turning it up WAY too loud.

Try with a source connected and paused. Then again, some receivers are just real noisy - sony/onkyo come to mind here.
