Historical info about the "invention" of Linux

1991 for his brand new 386SX in Helsinki Finland. He posted about it on a Minix messageboard and later the GNU tools were added.

His book "Just for Fun" has quite a bit of info (well, a modest ammount at least) It orginally started as a console he used to dial the uni and read his email... then it just kindof grew :0)

Short answer:

Linux is an operating system that was initially created as a hobby by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Linus had an interest in Minix, a small UNIX system, and decided to develop a system that exceeded the Minix standards. He began his work in 1991 when he released version 0.02 and worked steadily until 1994 when version 1.0 of the Linux Kernel was released. The current full-featured version is 2.4 (released January 2001) and development continues.

And Minix BTW is an OS that Andrew Tannenbaum developed. Linus liked that Minix could do, and Tannebaum used Minix mainly as a teaching tool, so Linus decided to use that a basis and develop on it. If you buy Andew Tannebaum OS book today, you will get a release of Minix will full source code..
