Best I found this for was 36.00 + 15 for shipping on pricewatch. This one is 11 dollars cheaper. Looks like at least a warm deal to me. If you want to be adventerous you could try to pricematch to overstock.com from the pricewatch place because overstock does have a pricematch policy, but I've never tried it. Goodluck.

Where do you see retail? Site says it's RECONDITIONED ?? I guess it's an okay/warm deal at best.

Wish I could've gotten in on the 8x Pine (Hitachi) DVD drive at Best Buy last week. Turns out I also had a 10% off customer appreciation coupon to use last weekend only, and I forgot about it, doh! Could've had the drive for 10% off $40 and then minus $25 in rebates, bringing my final price to around $11 or so after rebates. Oh well.

EDIT: If you're concerned about refurbs, Newegg's got a brand new Aopen retail 12x for $49 after shipping, and a Lite-on retail 16x for $55 shipped (but both out of stock )

It is factory reconditioned, which means it is not new. I bought the 8x Pine (Hitachi also) DVD Retail from Bestbuy for $39.99 - $25.00 = $15.00. It is brand new has comes with software too.

This is a good price, but beware that it is "factory reconditioned" . . . a refurb as far as I can tell. Good price though if you don't mind a refurb.

So what's the deal with the drive itself. I'm not familiar with Hitachi drives - does anybody have first-hand experience?

Hitachi is a japanese company. I haven't known of many things that japanese make bad. I haven't ever had any problem with anything from Hitachi.

alot of the stuff at overstock if reconditioned...ive had good luck so far with it. bought a mouse and a tnt2 video card.

Overstock has good stuff, look at those Micron cases that people got. Those were reconditioned, and they are nice. I'm using it right now.

If they would pricematch this iten i'd probably go for it.. if not I'll probably wait for a dvd drive with some rebates. If anyone attempts a pricematch with them please post about your results here, I'm probably going to call them when I get home today.

Anyone try a pricematch yet? Does anyone know if they pricematch the shipping price like Staples does? If they don't then you can get this thing for about 40 shipped without using coupon by PMing to the first good price on pricewatch, and then paying overstock.com's 3.95 shipping fee...

I doubt Staples would pricematch "Reconditioned" goods... but wouldn't hurt to try.
