Interesting. I will choose IBM/Hitachi drive among any other drives, because its better than any other drives performance-wise, noise-wise, RMA-wise, and more. And all the IBM drives I used were so reliable. (even 75GXP and 60GXP, which last 3 years, until I RMAed for 7K250, not because of problem, but because I wanted new one for me)

Anyway, this is one of the hottest deals I've recently read. But I always worry about Outpost MIR, because I heard only bad things about it.

You're the ONE person on earth that never had a deathstar problem. Anyone who worked with the drives regularly, such as myself in PC repair, knows they were literally the worst hard drives of the last decade.

make that 2 people, I've never had any problem with my 60GB Deathstar.

#3 here. My 60GB deskstar has been churning away for 3 years now, and I've had no problems. A maxtor and an MDT drive have both died on me within that time frame.

Whats interesting to me is, the rebate from I just downloaded says:

" this is for the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Deskstar 160GB, purchased at full price.'

So all they have to do is say the 99 dollars was not full price and you are screwed, I have never read anything like that in a rebate before.

Who's to say what's the full price. $99 is the full price. It doesn't say MSRP, so it's ok.

Might be their way of discouraging coupons.

Interesting enough. I just picked up the 250Gig HD from Compusa. At the bottom of their rebate form it also states "purchased at full price"

People and ibm bashing, it was a few models that had a specific issue
they didnt recal it and it ruined there business so they sold it to hitachi
there drives are just fine

its just like fujitsu and there desktop drive story that drove them out the market (though they still do notebook and high end drives)

hitachi drives are FINE! I have one, very very quiet compaired to maxtor of same generation/specs

if dell sells pcs with hitachi drives in them you can be assured there as high quality or better then the compitition, dells hype on r&d is true, its the best in the industry, they could just throw together parts but they dont they do insane amounts of r&d on them and they use hitachi drives so....

Rebate is too large and I also refuse to use IBM / Hitachi drives. I don't care if Deathstar was isolated incident or not. The way they just denied the problem is unforgivable.

IBM tried to sweep the problem under the rug, that's not the same thing though "Hitachi" drives are now fine.

i think this argument all rooted from the these 2 statements:

these are essentially IBM drives... they should be good...
I wouldn't use another IBM drive if you gave it to me.

technically, Hitachi drives != IBM drives. Hitachi just bought their brand name, so it's unfair to say Hitachi Drives = IBM drives.
with that said, IBM drives DID have problems and you couldn't pay me to use an IBM drive.

but Hitachi has brought life back into this line of drives and are almost comparable to seagates nowadays.
it is unfair to say hitachi drives suck because ibm drives sucked, but i find it fair game to say i would never use ibm drives, since those statements technically aren't that related.

"Full Price"

That's a standard legal disclaimer that is being appended to most rebate clauses. It basically means if they see price matching or a price modification of any type the rebate "house" can reject it.

Full Price = full advertised price, full sale price, etc.

My drive arrived today. It is a big rebate but I've wanted to try one of these drives for a PVR. Hitachi has the acoustical management feature like Maxtor. This drive also has a 3-year warranty. Was still $99 when I ordered and I paid the extra $5 for overnight shipping. Still was a little surprised when it showed up today around noon on a Saturday.
..
With respect to hard drive reliability, I've only had one drive die early and that was right out of the box. It was a maxtor 6.4G. My other drives have been displaced by larger drives before they died - and I've had many, many drives of all different types (however, I did happen to miss all the IBM DeathStar series ). Recently put back in a 1.2 Gig Quantum drive in a single purpose server. I believe that power supplies and line voltages play a significant role in the drive reliability.

Anyway - thanks to the OP.

I tried to buy one of these last night, and it was 99 dollars on the web page, and when you added to cart it said 109.99, so I sent them an e-mail saying what the problem was and to please fix so I could buy one, and they changed the site to 109.99 lol, I will not be buying one, they didn't even send me a thanks for pointing this out e mail.

Very hot deal indeed and another vote for Hitachi!! I got all of my rebates but one took a while...

No problems here; using Hitachi 180GB, IBM 120GB and 80GB (120GXP line) and yes I've got two 46GB 75GXPs...no problemos!!! Had to RMA one 75GXP a while back but the refurbished unit has been working virtually 24/7 now for almost 4 years now. And I've even got a couple of Travelstars (60GB 7200RPM) in several Thinkpads working like a champ!!

Bang for the buck, the Hitachi's are a great deal...

Except that, that term isn't legally defined, AFAIK.

To me, the consumer, "full price", is whatever I paid for it. I don't get it.

Would they deny the rebate, if the product was purchased, at least in part, via payment by way of store gift cards or credit? What about store coupons that offer a flat discount of X$ or X% off of a Y$ purchase?

If they meant MSRP, then they should state MSRP, and even better, state what MSRP *is*, right on the rebate.
I've seen rebates that have done that before.

I've had 5 IBM Deskstars go bad and had to RMA. They all had 3 year warranties that covered them although I really did miss my data. I have since backed up everything with the invent of DVD burners. I am getting sick of all the IBM bashing (I'm one who should complain). They were quick and quiet hdds and I loved them. I believe that their problems stemmed from their migration to denser platters. Things were worked out, but the damage to their reputation was not. Hitachi bought the division and kept on inovating. I have 2 of their drives that are working flawlessly for over 2 years. I recently bought a Western Digital and a Seagate. I like the Seagate's 5 year warranty, but 3 years is nice (after all the major manufactors went to 1 year). Personally, I back all of my valuable data up and buy based on the best price per gig with some consideration based on warranty.
