Notice: CompUSA is currently running $1.99 shipping but it does not work for some reason. From below, if you call them up, they will adjust your shipping costs to $1.99. YMMV (as always) and as always (again), good luck.

Click me!

$30 rebate.

If you are interested in two, go through the PayPal promotion and receive an additional $20 refund from Paypal. Final cost = $69.99 per drive + shipping.

PayPal promotion.

Finally, you can get 4% cashback going through F@twallet.com links!

Edit: Looks like they jack the shippig up on the confirmation page instead of what is in the drop down shipping box! People at SlickDeals have reported that they have called after ordering and that CompUSA gave them a credit back for the shipping (back to the $1.99 level). YMMV on that one and good luck.

OMG, I can use this as my new C: on the Vista system, but I've already spent too much this month. Resisting the urge!

So from the article, these drives have 5 platters? Less is better I thought.
Articles does say that the 5 platter 1TB is quieter than the 3 platter design from the previous generation. I wonder about the heat generated with the 5 platter design. Any thoughts?

This deal seems great, so I am still thinking about it.

You're right. It takes the $1.99 away after starting PayPal. Fuckers!

Edit: Looks like it won't give you the $1.99 shipping no matter how many drives or which payment you choose even though it has it on the drop down box. Changes on the confirmation page. Bastards!

I just tried it too, it changes it to $13.14 for me as well, not $1.99

The other thing that bothers me though is that it says 3-7 days shipping, but on the right it says to expect the order on Dec 5!? Um, that's like 2 - 3 weeks?

I picked one up not so long ago from ZipZoomFly for $99 AR. I have it in a Thermaltak BlacX SATA HD dock, and I can confirm it does run hot. Can't keep my finger on it for more than a few seconds during sustained I/O. Since this is my 1st 1TB drive, I can't compare it to others.

I just talked to a customer service rep this morning. He gave me no qualm about modifying my order to reflect the $1.99 shipping. In fact if you look at the CompUSA website now, the very top banner shows the promotion for $1.99 shipping on all orders over $100 and under 50lbs. Promotion is from Nov. 17th - 26th. He also informed me that the item is completely out of stock. A lot of orders are on backorder. They're expecting more shipment so that's why they're still taking orders. So if you don't mind waiting and dealing with the CSR over the shipping (online order still does not take the proper shipping) it's a hot deal.

What is the noise like compared WD 640 GB (the good one)?

edit: Reviews don't look too horrible as long as you keep a fan on them. I'm in for a pair! Thanks for the tip on the $20 off $200 (and of course, FatCash). I sent an email requesting they do a refund as they overcharged me for shipping too.

Just got a WD Caviar Green 1TB drive. Man, that thing is silent. I have it in the BlacX sitting next to my keyboard and I can't hear a thing. And, it is barely warm during sustained I/O. The Hitachi may be faster and has a larger cache, but you pay a price in noise (it is very loud) and heat.

Nice deal, I grabbed one. I got a "shipping charges changed" message and the shipping went up to $7.99 on the checkout screen... I'll call and see if I can get that fixed.

EDIT: got it adjusted back down to $1.99 after a friendly phone call. That makes the total $109.99 + $9.08 (tax to TX, bleh) + $1.99 = $121.06 - $30 MIR - $16.50 livecash = $74.56. Not bad at all for a 1TB drive

Unfortunately, now my order status says it's "on backorder". Hopefully it doesn't take forever to ship. (but I can't complain too much )

Actually Hitachi drives can be silent and conserve power if you download and burn a CD image available in their website. By booting the CD you can adjust the noise/performance balance and the power settings. I do that everytime I get a Hitachi drive for us in one of my DVRs. I read a review about the 1TB WD Caviar GP Green drive and bought one due to it's low operating heat and low power draw vs. the competition. With tweaking using the CD the Hitachi could get a lot closer to the WD Caviar GP.

Or... you could just buy a GP to begin with and not have to screw with it. Just a thought.

For $35 difference (about 35%), it's worth every bit of the effort!

I bit on the TD deal as well. I do have a small worry though, at the very end the expected ship date was in JANUARY! Obviously the rebate wouldn't still be good. I'll call them to sort it out later, I might have to cancel
