Hitachi 1tb drives any good?

Just got back from frys a little while ago.

I picked up a 1tb Hitachi 7200rpm 32mb retail drive today only special 69.99

Are these drives any good?

On the box it said 3yr warranty which I thought was good enough.

When I look up the model by number on drive or static bag it says 5yr warranty ???

Did I get a free upgrade or downgrade from Hitachi? Box was factory sealed not a returned item.

Does anybody know how many platters are in this drive.

The Hitachi A330 is the original Hitachi 1 TB drive, from 2008, with five platters and a 32 MB cache. I own a couple of those, along with a couple of A360 drives. The current version is the A380, I believe. I haven't had any problems with any of mine. The oldest are about a year old now.

Here's my HDTune 2.55 on a Hitachi 1 TB 360 drive and a Hitachi 1 TB 330 drive. Both drives were attached to the same built-in Dell SATA controller (Intel ICH7) on a Dell SC440 server.

360 - 16 MB cache, 3 platters
Burst - 155 MB/sec
Max. - 117 MB/sec
Min - 55 MB/sec
Average - 89 MB/sec
Access time: 13.2 ms

330 - 32 MB cache, 5 platters
Burst - 140 MB/sec
Max. - 83 MB/sec
Min - 42 MB/sec
Average - 69 MB/sec
Access time: 12.9 ms

I thought this is what the model number means

HDE721010SLA330 = 500GB, 32MB buffer
H = Hitachi
D = Deskstar
E = Series prefix
72 = 7200 RPM
10 = Full capacity?1TB
50 = Capacity this model, 50 =500GB
(10 = 1TB, 75 = 750GB)
S = Generation code
L = 26.1mm z-height
A3 = Interface, SATA 3Gb/s
3 = 32MB buffer
0 = reserved

Which part would one use to detemine the amount of platters Series? Generation?

It looks like yours is part of the "Enterprise-class" Hitachi series, the Deskstar E7k1000. That's why you have a five-year warranty.

The drives I mentioned above are from the 7K1000 and 7K1000.B series, which is what I own. I don't know the platter counts for the E7K1000 series. Edit: It has three 334 GB platters, a 32 MB cache, and temperature and vibration sensors.

Hitachi bought the Deskstar technology from IBM after IBM botched the whole operation resulting in class-action law suits and high-$$$$ settlements. Hitachi then fixed the problems and make great HDDs. Second best to WD, I say.

i sell a ton of those 1TB drives cause everyone hates seagate right now and were always out of the WD blacks. havent had any returns yet

Apart from those terrible drives produced in the beginning of the decade IBM/Hitachi have always produced top notch drives. (IBM even invented/introduced the HDD in 1956.)

I have used IBM/Hitachi since the beginning of the 80's and they have given me much less problems than Seagate or WD.

Guess for 69.99 I can't complain at all

The 2yrs of xtra warranty is a free bonus from Hitachi I guess.
