Sure they will. The 400gb drives were only released like 3 years ago and they are already at $99 brand-new. Man I love market competition

Can you just imagine what we're going to see later this year in SFF boxes? Just imagine a Shuttle with a 1-terabyte hard drive, 20x DVD burner (or Bluray/HD-DVD burner), Quad-Core processor, and 4 gigs of ram. Man...

Those reviews are nice to see though. It seems you get even better performance and not just extra space. I'd wish they release them with bigger sizes to account for the formatting space. I want 1TB formatted, darnit.

Why dont they just go back to the 5 1/4 size and make some 20-30tb drives then? I just took apart a 40mb old Mitsubishi drive that was 5 1/4, and I have but one dvd drive in my case with 3 more opening for that size, so why not go back to making them that big, you could make one hell of a size with 5 1/4 I would think And prolly cheap too.

For a given rpm, the speed of the edge of the platter is proportional to the diameter. The platters that Hitachi is using would fail (break apart?) at 7200 rpm, if they were made 5 1/4". That's why 10,000 rpm drives have lower data densities and higher prices.

The large, low performance Quantum Bigfoots were not very popular, though Dell stuck lots of folks with them.

Actually, Quantum tried that route with the BigFoot drives a couple of years ago.
5 1/4" drives, low rotational speed.

Pro: Cheap
Con: VERY slow (the seek times were crazy because of the large platters and low rotational speed)

In the end, the BigFoot drives died pretty quickly. If you want to pursue your thought further, googling that particular model might help.

They aren't. The only fiasco is/was with Winter Green not honoring rebates for Hanns G monitors. They had 19" LCDs for $99 after huge rebates all of last year and early this year.

PC Connection actually stepped up to the plate and refunded the rebate value directly to everyone's credit card (granted, you had to call). This is a huge hit for a retailer that wasn't expecting to have to deal with it.

So, in my book, they're an A+ reseller.

Drives of this size for most consumers ( not businesses) would be for data storage. I dont need fast access tiem for my porn. I love to watch it in slow motion .

I think this is pretty cool. It's not a great price, no, but if you're looking to run a 1TB machine with a single HDD, which I am, this is great.

I will wait until the prices drop substantially, but still nice to know these have arrived.

Well, $600 seems ridiculous. I just picked up 16 of these, for a RAID5 setup, from CDW, for a bit less that the $430 they are listing for now.

I think the thing is with platters that large, a 4200 or 5400 RPM drive would be roughly equal to a 2000 or 3000 RPM 3.5" drive - horrible. Heads would have to travel half a mile to get to the data.

It's a good idea, but I think they'd have to be minimum 7200 RPM to be worth using and that must present some engineering challenges.

You can't really even use FAT32 for drives in the 100+GB range I think. You're stuck with NTFS or a Linux filesystem.

so any other places have these in stock at a decent price? several shops showed stock had them wed-thurs last week, I ordered two from onsale.com @ $365. two days later, I get an email saying there's a problem with my CC, I call a half dozen times friday and today, and when i finally reach someone, they say it's out of stock.

I need these soon to finish my new computer and get my data transfered over. My apartment is a mess of computer parts.

Absolutely. I remember a time when Microcenter had a 540MB (that's MEGABYTES, kids) hard drive on sale for $279. I jumped on that thing faster than an epileptic on a trampoline.
