Hitachi 250GB Deskstar $109.99 after MIR @ Frys

Didn't see anyone mention this, but Fry's has a Hitachi 250GB Deskstar HDD for only $109.99 after MIR.

It's $249.99 - 120 MIR - 20 MIR = $109.99

I know everyone here hates rebates, but if you don't mind doing them then this seems like a pretty good deal. Not sure what the quality of Hitachi drives are though. I've always used Maxtor and Seagate.

Hitachi makes pretty good drives. Always a good idea to mirror or otherwise backup such large storage, but this is definitely a hot deal

I've been using HDDs from WD, Seagate, Maxtor, and IBM (now Hitachi) with capacity range from 40GB-200GB over the years. I know there was a lot of problems with IBM DeskStar series 75GXP (and also with the 60GXP, I think) that went public 2-3 years ago and I know a lot of you guys still stay away from DeskStar HDDs. My experience is, from my 20 HDDs mostly WD, some IBM/Hitachi, some Maxtor and Seagate. 3 WD HDDs, 2 DeskStar, and 1 Maxtor went bad and got to RMA back to manufacturer, etc.. Got replacement drives 4-6 weeks later. All replacement drives from WD are Refurbished, regardless how new they were, while Maxtor and Hitachi sent me brand new drives, even though my bad HDDs were almost 3 years old (a couple weeks before the 3-year warranty expires). Fairerwise, I have to say the number of my HDDs are 8 WD, 5 IBM, 3 Maxtor, and 2 Seagate. Consider the number of drives failed per manufacturer and the usage hours per day (3-4 hours average), the DeskStar series are not so bad. My 2 cents...

advance rma from maxtor, you get the drive in like 3-4 days.

I had failures on both Maxtor and wD some work good some don't you have to be lucky > I had WD that died the next day and Maxtor that was in there lived beyond that

The hitachi 250gb is one of the best hard drives available currently. Check www.storegereview.com and their review of it.

Picked up TWO for 99.00 AR at Wilsonwille Fry's. Did not see anymore on the shelf!

Yep, saw only two on the shelf at Fry's on Renton, WA. Didn't get them because don't need them right now, but they were $99 each AR.

The wierd thing is that if you walked a little bit further up, you'd see a pile of the same drives for like $200, or something like that. Didn't get that.

Also at Renton's Fry's, they had the Maxtor 250GB for $130 AR, but the only two available were apparenly refurbished by Fry's -- they had a sticker saying those drives were open box, returned items or something else and that Fry's had tested them and found no issues. It also stated the item would carry the same warrantly as new and that Fry's would back the manufacturer's warranty.

Then again, you walked a little further and you see the same drive costing more. I wonder if those $99 Hitachi drives were also refurbished -- they didn't have any stickers though.

Good luck with the Hitachi rebate.

I bought a 160GB drive from Fry's that had two rebates, a $5 and a $60. Haven't heard back on the $5 yet but the $60 was rejected because it wasn't postedmarked in time. I wish I would have sent it registered mail because I mailed it 11 days before the cut off date. First time I got screwed on a rebate. Live and learn I guess.

Every drive manufacturer will do this, you just have to ask for it, they usually don't offer it to you.

You give them your CC info, they send you a new drive right away. If you don't send the defective drive in within a certain period, they just charge you for the drive.

People refer deskstar as deathstar because most Hitachi drives went dead with your data very quick.
