Hitachi 500GB vs. Seagate 400GB?

I am building a file server, which will run Gentoo with Apache and Samba.

Should I go for a 400GB Seagate (5yr warranty) or a 500GB Hitachi for like $80 more with a 3yr warranty?

I have been hesitant to go with Hitachi since the Deathstar days.

Yeah Hitachi will never gain my support back since the DeathStar, I hated that drive and I still do!!!! I would go with Seagate, better warranty and RMA service +BETTER RELIABILITY!!

Do yourself a favor, go with the Seagate.

fanboy crap.

hitachi is an excellent manufacturer and their drives are great. Low noise and low heat plus very good performance. Unfortunately the same goes for the Seagate drives. Id say that op already picked out two reliable manufacturers.

..5 year warranty sounds good.

The new Seagate 7200.9 drives are suppose to support up to 500GB. Your guess is as good as mine on when they will hit retail. Most likely some time in the next 2-4 months as they were announced a couple of months back. Not sure about the other companies on when they will get theirs out. I have a 400GB Seagate and I'm waiting for more 500GB drives to come out so I can pick up a couple more 400GB for cheap, or at least cheaper than they are now.

hey a 5 year warranty is way better than a 3.... That tells me segate has faith?.. their product should go at least 5 without problems (in most cases even longer). If a company had doubts that a product would die within 5, they probably would offer a 3 year warranty.

Seagate.
Or WD.
Then Samsung.

The two i would be wary off: Hitachi & Maxtor.

The post-IBM Deskstars have actually been pretty good. Not nearly as loud and I haven't had my 2003 one crap out yet (which, granted, isn't saying much...).

With that said, I really like the Seagates for the warranty and the quietness. Plus they have the 2nd coolest HDD codename ("Raptor" > "Barracuda").

The new hitachi's are f'ing awesome.........i was wreary too when i bought my 160gb drive just the other month, but it runs so silent and preforms awesome (its loading windows faster then my old Raptor RAID 0 array)

and the 500GB is said to be very fast (almost near par with a 74GB raptor, due to the platter density)........so hitachi by far.

please stop the Deathstar nonsense.

Hitachi is making some of the best drives at the moment. my next hard drive will most likely be a Hitachi. they have been getting amazing reviews. T7K250 is likely my next choice

get Hitachi

I would Samsungs and Hitachi's above Seagate even though the seagate warranty is better. It runs cooler and faster and seems very reliable. What more could anyone want?
IBM made great harddrives year after year after year in the late nineties. One bad model and suddenly they are the pariahs.

The Deathstar got rave reviews too if I recall. It wasn't until 6 months later that people found out they were duds.

Yep you are correct sir, and as for the person that called me a fanboy above for backing the Seagate over the Hitachi.....SHENS TO YOU.

I currently own three diferent HDD's that I am running in machines WD Raptor, Samsung Spinpoint and a 7200.8 Seagate. I think you need to rethink your fanboy comment dude since I don't only buy Seagate, I just don't like Hitachi drives....sorry.

Yes the deathstars were still fast if not reliable. IBM was churning out 'drives of year' models continuously at one point until their reputation was damaged irreparably by the single deathstar episode.

GTaudiophile, the semi-secret is that samsungs are more reliable than all other brands and hitachi is just as good if not better than seagate even with the better warranty.

Everyone is forgetting that the old IBM Deskstar's had Glass Platters and the major issue was with the head crashing and stripping off all the magnetic coating "click of death".

The new drive like my T7K250 doesn't have Glass Platters and is made in one location in Thailand not several different locations as the old IBM Deskstars which is what some say attributed to their poor quality. If you read the history of this fiasco, you see that IBM never really admitted to what the root cause was but had several class action suits against them.

I can't blame past owners of the failed drives from feeling the way they do, it's just like anything else in the consumer market, but I believe Hitachi has taken great steps to insure quality and are trying to improve their image.

This debate is silly. Right now I love Seagates. Quiet, reliable, 5-year warranty. That is a good thing. You all need to let this "deathstar" go. I owned 3 IBM Deathstars. Quitest drive and very fast seek. Loved 'em... and then, one by one, all three died. RMA'd 'em and of the three replacement drives two more died. I am still using those 3 drives today (1 IBM, 2 Hitachi) 24/7. It WAS one bad model (75GXP). That model has nothing to do with today's Hitachi drives. I've got friends that hate any one of the major HDD mnfg for one reason or another. The fact is that all HDDs fail. If you don't back-up your data then you are just asking for heartache. Yes, IBM had a bad model line... now let's move on.

Personally, I would recommend Seagate based on my experience with their current drives. I have no experience with Hitachi's latest drives. From what I read they sound like they're very competitive.

On the basis that you are building a file server, I'm guessing you aren't too worried about sound. And the performance bit is moot as well, so I would go with Seagate, simply because of the warranty. You don't upgrade servers as much as you do a standard PC, so you should have the machine around for quite some time. Just remember to keep the receipt somewhere.

You guys and this need to have a bazzillion years of warranty. You really think you will keep any drive for it's entire warranty period?..doubtful... In 2-3 years you will be looking at something better to purchase and will offload your current hardware for market value. Not to mention that what you are selling it for even with say a year left on warranty won't fetch you much more considering current market prices on NIB units.

I'd weigh in the cost per GB, and then figure in how much the extra 2 more years of warranty time is worth.
Then I'd go with the best deal. IMO, $80 more for 100 more GB is a terrible expense. Especially when you can get a 400GB drive for under $200 (after rebates.) In this case I'd go with Seagate.
