Lot of ppl have experienced a difference and posted about it... when switching from a 4.2 k drive to a 7.2 k one... They say it feels .. "snappier"....

I am just waiting to take the plunge myself....

it is a lot faster.. it feels as fast as my desktop system - but beware, it makes a bit more noise, and generates more heat.

Makes a world of difference in anything involving HDD activity. It can make a sluggish lappy feel much snappier.

The noise is not really an issue. It has a little more vibration and the heat is a little more... but the wireless mini PCI and memory get much hotter than the HDD in my R40.

Oh.. yes.. maybe it's the wlan card and the memory that gets hot underneath - I thought it was the hard disk!

noise is an issue for me though, I thought it was going to be virtually silent -b ut maybe I have a faulty specimen - I am contemplating sending it in for repairs (IBM T41p, a week old).

Different people, different answers... but if you ask me, it makes a lot of difference. Hey, you will even feel the difference with a a 5400 rpm drive (5K80 for example) Faster boot time, shorter wait to load applications.....

I have one in my notebook and it makes the computer feel pretty fast even when my Pentium M 1.7Ghz clocks down to 298mhz to save on battery.

With a 5400rpm drive, the overall feeling of the notebook when the cpu clocks down is not nearly as responsive.

Pentium-Ms don't go lower than 600 MHz - just FYI :

Agreed. 5400 "feels" a big difference in regular use than a 4200. The jump from 5400 to 7200 didn't feel quite as significant on me with the laptops/drives I played with. I'm stilll debating on grabbing a 5400 drive myself.

well then windows/cpu-z must be reporting something wrong because my 1.7 shows up as 298mhz frequently when it is on battery power.

yup, they're wrong... lowest clock is 600mhz, and from there yhe clock jumps in 200 mhz increments, up to max clock freq..

600>800>1000>1200>1400>1600>1700?

200mhz increments and 100mhz increments right?

Actually the only pentium M notebooks I've ever heard of clocking down to ~300mhz are Pentium M based voodoo notebooks, my friend's HP and dell only go to 598.

I have a Voodoo M:355.
