Thinking about doing this over a WD Caviar black in 2TB... Any word if this is a good drive or not?

I've had 3 of these running 24/7 in my WHS for about a year with no problems.

Hitachi's drives have been reliable workhorses in my (limited) employ. The deathstar is long behind us.

Now, typically (from the reviews I have read), most Hitachi drives fare well on transfer speed and general performance, but are never the fastest on consumer benchmarks.

For the price, I think they're great drives.

Cool thanks! I'm going to get two to install in my new NAS that I'm getting this week...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this appears to be a cool/quiet storage oriented drive that runs at ~5000 RPM, not a performance oriented one that runs at 7200RPM like the WD Blacks, and thus should be compared to a WD Green drive.

This Hitachi drive - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822145473 - would be more in line with WD Black performance

Pariah, you are correct. I have the 7200rpm drives. I read the post too quickly.
My appologies to the OP. The ones I do have are problem-free so far. Had I not just bought 3 WD Green drives from another hot deal, I would buy these.

I checked the 5K3000 manual, its speed is rated at ~5900 RPM, same as WD Green drives.

$79 is a nice price, but we've seen the Samsung F4 go for that much, and it's a better drive with less platters.

I always appreciate it when someone acknowledges their mistake, just as I appreciate it when mistakes are addressed. Accuracy and credibility should get more credit. Thanks to both of you. On an unrelated note, I have a theory that most complaints about bad drives are OEM (loose) drives which have probably been poorly handled and for that reason, I've never yet purchased a non-retail packaged drive. As all who have had data loss know, saving a few dollars isn't worth the concern, much less that occurrence of non-backed up drive failure. I have two Hitachi 1TB drives -- one .B and one .C . The C is definitely faster but is FULL of corruption. I use QuickPar to protect many files and have found a HUGE percentage of corruption of files. For example, my mp3 files where I might have 19 parity file blocks (per mp3) will show an average of 2 blocks that need repair. This has been about 90% of my mp3 files but the corruption is by no means limited to mp3s. When I go to install or reinstall a program, I frequently find the file corrupted and will not install. I usually rar and then zip files I keep and have found the rared files are also corrupt but the zipped files are OK. The .B drive is my boot drive and it is also partitioned for storage and the storage partition is primarily video files with a few mp3s that haven't much Quick Par support (protection) so I haven't seen any evidence of any significant corruption, though C has a lot of problems that I can't explain. The .C drive is a single partitioned drive used for storage and backup though I have a couple of things installed on it. That's where I see all the corruption. I've seen no discussion on the web and don't know what to do about this. Any knowledge of this issue or thoughts? Anyone with more knowledge care to comment?

I got this drive a while back for $70 AR, and I've seen it go for as low as $60 AR.

For those who are wondering, it's 3-platter, standard format and I've had no problems with it.

I have the same drive, got it for $60 after rebate back in January. Runs quiet, cool and much quicker than expected. I'm happy with it.

title clearly states this is a 50,003,000 rpm drive

perfect! The drive spins so fast that the data actually goes backwards in time. So when you power up the drive, the data is there even before you create it!!

I'm in for 200 of them and going to start storing my stock trades and projections! Billionaire-ville, here I come!
