Hitachi or WD 750 GB?

I would like to buy one tonight. I don't want to pay for the full TB so 750 is the way to go.

Most reviews have the 1 TB drive slightly faster then the WD, but I don't know how much slower the 750 GB drive would be if at all.

Also, newegg has some reviews with the WD arriving DOA or going dead after a short time.
So the question is if the Hitachi might be more reliable then I would rather get it, even with the price premium.

Thanks

Don't forget one thing when reading vendor product reviews...
They tend to be slanted towards the negative side, and should be taken with a grain of salt.

* People that have problem usually get more emotional about it and tend to submit "reviews" more than those that buy the parts and have no problems at all.
* Some people sending parts back, have little or no technical knowledge about the parts themselves. And simply send back a part they "think" is giving them the problems.
There is plenty of evidence as to this, reading some of the complaints people post in this forum.
They blame parts for issues but don't actually know where the problem stems from.

What's the reason for doing that? I know there's a DOS util available to do it, but why?

Right now I'd say get either the WD or Seagate... TODAY!!! Black Friday sales FTW!

Outpost.com has Seagate 750GB EIDE or SATA for $160 plus shipping, no rebates.

Newegg.com has Western Digital 750GB SATA for $150 with free shipping, but you have to be a newsletter subscriber and use a promo code (otherwise $10 more).

An extra 2 years on the warranty.

Okay, so TLER makes it "firmware similar" to the RE2 drive, but the real warranty is still 3 years, right?

Okay, I see you meant buy the 5 year warranty drive and disable TLER... making it more data friendly when not used with a RAID controller.

Pretty sure Anand's benchmarks showed the Hitachi as being a bit faster. It might have been the 1tb version, but the 750 is the same drive minus one platter.

In the past, Western Digital has warned against using drives with TLER in single-disk environments. However, no such warning accompanies the 750GB RE2, which WD says can be used all by its lonesome.
