I've had this drive in my IBM T40p laptop for months now.......runs like a charm.

Idle noise is a tad more than my Hitachi 5400rpm 40gb 8mb-cache drive, but not much.....


I recomend this drive to anyone. Much better system performance improvement than a few more CPU-mhz or MB of ram........ but of course that depends on what you're doing....


Some co-workers laugh that I "only" have a 60gb hd.....they have the 80gb 4200rpm IBM model....... that drive may be 25% bigger, but it's also at least 25% slower...... And since I only run about 20-30gb total drive useage, I don't mind.

Atacom is out of Cali so tax will be on it, for me at least shipping looks like $6.83. This deal looks better I think.

Nice deal. I have a 7K60 in my IBM T40 and it works perfectly and really improves overall system performance. This E7K60 is supposed to be designed for 24x7 operation and is even better.

I heard that this drive is better than the Toshiba even though the Toshiba has double the buffer cache size (8MB vs. 16MB). If you compare specs, one area where the 7K60 wins out is average access time of 10ms vs. 12ms of the Toshiba.

I have been waiting on the price to drop for notebook drives for months now, and NOTHING. Maybe these faster drivers will push down the price of the 80 GB drives (which my wife insists her Archos must have soon), they have been sitting at about $195 it seems like forever.

Haven't used either retailer before but their reviews on resellerratings.com don't look too bad. Would it really be worth it to get the enterprise version instead? I plan on using my new Thinkpad as my primary computer from now on, but I don't exactly plan on using it as a server.

Speaking of IBM T40s, I have posted this on the notebook forum but no one has responded. I was wondering if anyone has a slight squeaking problem with their palm rest, especially near the side of the buttons closest to the keyboard? I ordered a replacement palm rest but wondering if this is a common problem? I tried taking out the keyboard and putting the palm rest back in but it seems like there are squeaks every now and then. Other than that, this laptop is the best I've ever owned

Just read from the chubby wallet thread that there's probably no idle power management on the E7K60 which is designed for 24x7 operation on blade servers. Hitachi said that it's not meant for laptop operation. If you have a laptop, you should get the 7K60, not the E7K60. More info here:

Also, read up on the chubby wallet thread about the warranty term on the 7K60's sold at newegg and zzf. It seems to be hit and miss, and could be no warranty, 1-yr, or 3-yr, depending on your luck. Always double check the warranty term on hgst's website right after you receive the drive and if it doesn't agree with what's stated on the product description, you can return the drive.

Sadly, the 5K80 (Hitachi's latest 40GB 5400rpm drive) has gone UP in price from when it first started selling almost a year ago. All the while, desktop hard drives continue to drop in price.
