That is a ton of data to lose...they should sell them in pairs so you can do backups.

What is also interesting is, they have said they have deployed lots of these He filled units, yet, the data recovery guys that frequent these forums haven't seen them yet.

I know we are talking about a extremely small sample of data recovery guys, and the fact that these He drives aren't mainstream yet, it just makes you wonder if these are indeed higher quality parts, or, is the He gas actually making a big difference in reliability?

These are enterprise drives (and priced as such). Do the data recovery guys have a lot of enterprise customers? I would think the enterprise setups would all be redundant and thus not need data recovery services.

This. ^^

Replacement HDDs come out of the consumables budget.

Was unaware of the speed of these drives, pretty impressive. Hmm, might be time to upgrade the 4TB storage drive.

These drives are almost all(99.999%) going into enterprise and cloud big data installations which significant inherent redundancy (+2 or better with some upwards of +5/6) because that's where their economics make the most sense. The he drives have a significant upfront cost disadvantage compared to non-he drives making them mostly uninteresting for consumers but very very good TCO and power characteristics making them ideal for large installations.

These drives are becoming a serious offering. The article I was reading recently say that enough is being sold to the big end of town, that mass production numbers/costs are improving that it will be soon (<5 years) be in a position to sell to the average consumer.

That being said, outside of size and speed, the big selling points of these things (lower power ect) are lost for that consumer base. A rack of them for the big players and power savings are something serious to look at. And as a plus, they do not use SMR

A good indicator that they are a good thing, the article mentioned that seagate is working on their own version of a He drive. Not sure how that will pan out in the short term though. I am not expecting much from it.

7200rpm. No thanks, don't want the noise nor the heat. Its good that the bar is finally raised capacity wise though.

On the other end of the spectrum is the dismal performance of the Seagate Archive 8Tb.

I wish WD would hurry up with their Red/Green drives that are becoming the only tolerable compromise for a regular consumer.

Actually, these drives are both quieter and cooler than you would expect. The power usage is basically best in class and their noise levels are extremely competitive.
