Was listening to some crazy talk from Repubican Marilyn Musgrave, Rep. for Colorado about how the most critical issues facing America are winning the "culture war", following God and banning Gay marriage. Reminds me of another movement that was very similar in tone:

"Today Christians ? stand at the head of [this country]? I pledge that I never will tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity .. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit ? We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the *poison of immorality* which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of *liberal excess* during the past ? (few) years."

Adolf Hitler: [The Speeches of Adolph Hitler, 1922-1939, Vol. 1 (London, Oxford University Press, 1942), pg. 871-872]

When are Americans going to wake up to what the Religious Right has done to the country?

As long as the indoctination continues with the children... never.

Some of it reminds me about most Christians i know of (British and American) who desperatly want to censor the world except for violence against those who don't think like they do.

one of the features of national socialism was combating the 'rot' that liberalism had wrought on society

Yes, the thought that individuals had freedom and responsibilities (the core of liberalism) was replaced with a group think that the Government were the ultimate decider over justice, rights and responsibilities.

It's still all over the place, in every country, under different names, those who want to discriminate based on something they cannot identify with.

It's fucking sad that we as a species didn't learn a god damn thing from it.

Don't worry about it, i've been called every name in the book, all from Nazi to Communist and intolerant to TOO tolerant, you name it.

So get used to it, when you make a good post, i'll agree.

Extremes never work, there has never been a successful pure socialist society, never been a successful pure capitalist societey, never been a successful extremist nation in any direction of ANY sort...

Now you might argue against that but i mean for the nation and the nation consists of it's people.

You might find the Pre-Power Nazi's very interesting.

Say what you want about it but yeah, sandorski is right, the exact same arguments against abortion, womens role in society, homosexuals and immigration were used by the Nazis.

A social conservative does whare a lot with the Nazist movement, liberals share absolutely nothing with it.

This might seem like an insult you want to quickly brush away, but think about it for a second.

Censorship is still alive and well too in conservative movements, last one up to the book burning was Sarah Palin.

Never fear, for the liberal God fearing Christians have things well in hand and have been doing the Lord's work 24/7/365 under the radar.

I don't think there can be such a thing as a true religious liberal since religions are hardly for individualism

You see, liberalism has to do with everyones freedoms and responsibilities, basically, to use an oldie but a goodie, freedom of speech, that is a liberal idea to the core, freedom. That you can't shout fire because it could cause harm to others is also a liberal idea to the core, responsibility.

Your freedom ends when you infringe upon someone elses freedom, this it the way liberalism works and how to include religion with that? I have no idea.

Nothing is farther from the truth. Ignore the stereotypes and find the facts.

A point well-taken.

I hereby edit my post in response: "Never fear, for the non-neo-conservative Christians...."

The question is how safe is for Musgrave to pull this political grandstanding? I think there is a fine line and no district wants to be the laughing stock of the nation. I can well remember, Earl Landgrebe, the last supporter of Nixon, who famously remarked, "my mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts." And Landgrebe was not reelected in 1974, the only republican able to manage losing that district ever since.

I would say her own froth makes her vulnerable, but only if she reflects national shame back at the district. She really does not need to go off the deep end to energize the wing nuts in her base, they will vote for her by default, but when she alienates everyone rational, its politically very risky.

I think this is a great illustration how Hitler like views became so popular. Hitler was EXTREMELY popular as a leader in Germany once he became a prominent figure. I am not surprised that people are popular who preach (essentially intolerance) in the name of preservation of self.
