Nv seems to be benefiting from lower driver overhead in dx12
AMD seems to be benefiting from both, lower driver overhead in dx12 and better GPU utilization (AC = 10% perf increase).

I called this years ago when AMD secured the console design wins and released Mantle. Everyone scoffed and lol'd at how little money AMD made from these deals but they did it for the long con. It was just a matter of time before AMD's superior architecture was allowed to shine, and that time appears to be starting now. The trump card played by AMD was essentially giving Mantle to Microsoft to ensure DX12.

Nvidia can't get Pascal out fast enough but I fear AMD also one up'd Nvidia for the nex-gen cards (AMD securing more power efficient 14nm, while Nvidia is stuck on 16nm) and with AMD releasing a super refined GCN architecture (Polaris) and no sign of new gaming consoles in sight AMD may have already secured the lead for the next race.

Well played AMD, maybe this is one of the reasons Scott Wasson joined them?

That's an interesting view on it.

980TI(10%)/390(10%)/390X(5%) gains.
280X/980 is same.
960 loses a tad(5%).

980 Ti gains only at 1080p while losing a bit at 1440p /4k when going from DX11 to DX12. R9 390 gains at all resolutions when going from DX11 to DX12. GTX 980 results are the same in DX11/DX12.

Yeah that part surprised me. Considering the constant "Maxwell can't do DX12!!!1!!!" posts around here. It gained almost 10%. Not too bad for a card that supposedly can't do DX12.

sorry but the 980 Ti gains only at 1080p while losing perf at 1440p and 4k when moving from DX11 to DX12. 980 perf is same at all resolutions. R9 390 gains consistently at all resolutions to about 10% higher perf.

Interesting comments, the one I see repeated often is 'heavily OC'd 980 Ti'. Factory GM200s are very conservative out of the box/on paper. My 980 Tis boosted to that level right out of the box without touching anything.

Very impressive showing by Hawaii, despite all the flak it got early on its life it really has some strong legs. I would have kept my 290Xs if they could do HDMI 2.0.

I always wondered why Maxwell had no benefit in those DX12 benchmarks while AMD zoomed ahead. Maxwell was always better in DX11, or at least mostly, but maybe things will change in DX12. Hopefully Pascal is good at DX12. I think its safe to say Maxwell is as dead as Kepler. Both dead. Toss them in the trash please. Do it now.

I would add that they would continue to lose the console wars because they will never get an x86 license at this point. And the probability that they can get both MS/Sony to jump to their weak arm is like the end of the world probabilities. I think their lack of foresight in not pushing for an x86 license instead of a large cash settlement is coming back to haunt them.

Both Hitman and AOTS use async compute. Nvidia has not shown gains with async compute. In fact performance regresses a bit wrt DX11. AMD also benefits from lower driver CPU overhead in DX12. Nvidia had much lower DX11 CPU overhead than AMD which gave it a leadership position in DX11 games.

its actually pretty funny people always talk about bad amd dx11 perf. all of the recent games were dx12? because i dont see any crippling perf. in all other games that were tested this year nor last year.

its like people want to tell me you acually cant play dx11 games with an amd card. how ridiculous is that

This is irritating.

I am in the market to upgrade my three year old 7970.I wonder if the 390x is a good option or maybe a used 980TI.

I would wait for next gen. Better dx12 support, performance and all sorts of good stuff. Also, 14 vs 28 nm.

A couple more DX-12 game releases and GTX 970 could be worth sub $200.

Yep. No one will want a card that only runs games from 2 years ago.

You can toss me one of those 980Ti's.

In 12 months you'd probably regret it. It won't run anything and will likely be on par with a $150.00 AMD entry level card designed only to replace onboard video.

LOL don't buy anything Nvidia right now. I think the picture is getting more and more clear. Anything Pre-Pascal is going to be absolute trash very soon. Hate to say it but that's how things are shaping up.

oh look, the resale on my 980s just crashed in to the ground...

this is going to suck.

Absolutely not. We are skeptical of Maxwell on a niche forum. The average person will buy your 980s close to full price.....

I got my R9 290 for $200, and the person went out and bought a GTX 970 new. It's doing worse in the games he is playing than the 290 he sold to me.

People just buy based on what they believe is right, they rarely look at benches, and I've seen people look at benches and not understand them. Which I don't get at all....

While Nvidia got people to upgrade from Kepler to Maxwell to Pascal.
AMD users are still on Hawaii or TAhiti mostly.

Sounds like Nvidia is winning the money wars at least?

Ahaha, 980 Ti @ 1380Mhz is only 7-6% faster than 390X (290X) @ 1070Mz depending on resolution

I did not expect this kind of result

Are we going to see a pattern where Hawaii was first fighting against GK110, then GM204 and finally GM200 in its final days? Now that would be something else.

Tahiti was kind of in that situation. It c̶a̶m̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶a̶r̶k̶e̶t̶ ̶d̶u̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶G̶T̶X̶4̶8̶0̶ ̶d̶a̶y̶s̶, went up against the GTX580, GTX680, and today is pretty well just as fast (and has as much vram) as a GTX780. AMD's GCN appears to be a very forward-thinking architecture.

Actually Tahiti came in January 2012, two years after GTX 480 (March 2010).

You are right... my bad. When Tahiti arrived it's competition for two or three months was the GTX580, not the GTX480, and then the GTX680 arrived (March I believe).
