Hittachi 500G USB Drive not recognized?

This 2.5 inch drive is not recognized on my Asus Eeepc Atom netbook. It is seen on my friends larger Toshiba laptop. I use Win7. Now, why would that be? All he did was plug it in and there it is. It doesn't even show on my computer.

It could be that the netbook doesn't put out enough power through the USB ports. Are you using one of those "Y" USB cords? Those pull power from two ports.

yes, it has a "Y" type cable and I tried it with both plugged into the netbook. It doesn't have anything to do with Wn 7 starter edition does it? That is one difference between his computer and mine.
I have seen on Newegg where users report their MSI netbooks work with USB drives so I don't know why mine should be any different.

Nope.

I'm not familiar with that netbook but like Zap, I'll bet it's a power problem.

If the power LED isn't being lit or you can't feel the drive powering-up, it's definately a netbook power problem.

If I were you I'd be looking into the "power options" on the netbook.....if it's got any.

I am sorry that I did not previously include the info that the unit does power up. My apologize. The LEDs light up on the bottom of the unit and you definitely can feel it running.

Can you see the drive in Disk Management and if yes, what the disk info is provided?

Right click "Computer", select "Manage", navigate to "Disk Management" on the left side, see what is in there.

There is nothing there. If you weren't actually looking at it being plugged in you wouldn't know it was plugged in. I unplugged it and plugged it back innumerable times. Nothing. My friend plugs it into his computer one time and there it is.
