I've glanced at a few websites and I think I remember them saying you can hurt yourself if your not doing it right. Is it really necessary to have someone show you how to properly do it or are there just a few small key things to remember? I'm getting pretty bored with ellipitals and need some more interesting cardio.

Just make certain you wrap your wrists for good support since you're a beginner. I've seen a good number of people fold their wrist bad enough to sprain it their first session or 2.

Also remember to roll your fists and wrist inward when you punch so when you hit the bag your little finger is at a 2 O'clock position and your thumb is at a 7 O'clock position.

Yes, have someone either show you or help you out. Don't be like the trainers who tell women to hit pads regardless of form...if you're going to punch something, punch it correctly. Or kick, but I don't know if your gym'll allow that, as the hanging apparatus could be damaged.

I like Mexican hand wraps for $5 - make sure they are 2" x 180" -- like http://www.ringside.com/DETAIL.ASPX?ID=25209

I also like the super bag gloves with velcro with 12-16oz of padding instead of those piece of junk leather things with like 4oz of padding. -- these are decent for $25 http://www.ringside.com/DETAIL.ASPX?ID=25083

Nice price for leather gloves, I've been using these proforce's for years, and they last a long time, and have good fit and feel. I agree not to waste money or time on bag gloves, they are too light and wear out way too fast.

I prefer those 4 oz or less gloves so I can feel the bag. As long as my knuckles are padded I'm fine. Of course my Heavy Bag is broke in so it's not rock hard. There's a lot more give to the bag than say someones noggin:laugh:

For the Speed Bag I prefer to use weight gloves without any padding.

Ahh...you're probably a hard core guy . My fists can't take it yet, I feel like I'm going to break my hand. Of course my bag is a POS where some of the sandbags apparently broke open or shifted. There are certain spots that are like hitting a wall. I've marked them with a marker so I don't break my hand....heh.

Like I said, my bag is broke in so it's not rock hard. If I had a new bag and didn't wrap it in duct tape and beat it with a bat to soften in up I'd have to use heavily padded gloves like everyone else but it's not as satifying hitting with heavily padded gloves as it is with lightly padded gloves.

Bag gloves fall apart to fast for my usage, with sweating and kicking, I get sand on the bag, and the abrasiveness results in the gloves getting more wear and tear than with indoor use. I also like the extra weight of the 12 ouncers for conditioning. I take my 100lbs nevatear down after every session and take it in the garage and flip it upside down to help prevent too much settling. Besides, can't leave it out in the weather. 12oz gloves also feel "right" to me, 6'5" 235lbs i.e. natural heavyweight.
