HIV and blood transfusions

Now that the transfusion process is regulated for safety, I would say the risk is very little.

I don't know, but it doesn't sound almost non-existent as someone has said. My relative is currently working on a case of HIV infections from blood transfusion due to the companies intentionally taking blood from homosexuals because it was more cost effective.

I think some clarification is required.

In the USA, the risk is almost none.

In many other advanced countries such as countries in the EU, Canada, Au, Japan the risk is very small...but can vary from country to country.

In developing or 3rd world countries...take careful counsel prior to a transfusion...the risk is much higher.

All of it is screened. But it does not sit around for a couple of months.

umm....the hiv infections weren't caused from the donors being gay. it was because the company sucks at screening their blood.

Well I don't think blood transfusions are exactly elective procedures so you basically have the chance of dying from not getting it or getting the transfusion with a very small chance of getting AIDS and having that kill you in time. Either way, you are going to die.

Autologous donations are a great idea if one is going in for elective surgery, has a rare blood type or has multiple unique antibodies (Kell, Duffy, Lutheran, Kidd, Lewis, etc.) that make it difficult to find a properly matching donor RBC.

Otherwise one could have their own blood stored, albeit at a pretty steep cost. One would be SOL if they went were counting on having their own blood on hand and got hurt while on a trip or vacation.
