HL 2 Stuttering Sound/Video

I did the

-heapsize 512000 +cl_smooth 0

trick in the launch properties for HL2 and it did the job for me. My stuttering is gone. Thank you so much for that advice and other thread.

Ditto here. It's not that the game goes slow, but the sound stutters :\... So I've been forced to go with medium detail on models and textures :\.

Same on my rig, every few mins I'll get a slow down and a sound will stutter for about 3 secs then its fine.

Ok I take that back, I'm still getting the stuttering. I thought it helped at first, but nope.

I upgraded to the nvidia beta drivers and some of the sound problem went away.

Okay, I'm only getting the stuttering when it autosaves. How do I know? Well every time it happens I hit escape go to Load Game and there is the latest autosave with a thumbnail pic. The pic and autosave spot is always right where the stuttering is. We need someway to disable autosaving.

Yep, my PC crashes when I autosave sometimes.

i'm getting sound stuttering and fps jerks occasionally.

pretty sure it's sound related though, it only happens when a sound is played - usually a 'new' sound played that session.

Same deal here... Video pauses for 5-15 seconds and sound stutters during the pause then okay.

After extensive further testing, it is DEFINITELY the autosaving that is making me stutter. I have done everything possible in-between the autosaves to try and get it to stutter and it won't. Every time it stutters I check and sure enough there is a new autosave. I will worship whoever figures out how to disable autosaving. It may not be the cause of everyone's stuttering, but it's the ONLY thing keeping this game from 100% for me.

Same set up as you and getting the jery problem. Anyone else notice that the gun sounds sometimes crackle?

Yep - it would be great to disable the auto-saves. We can always F-5 (quicksave) when we want to. To further prove it always happens during a save, if you do a F-6 (thanks Zeppelin2282) or manual save you'll get the same pause.

As widespread as this problem appears to be I'm guessing Valve fixes this quite soon. That said, as a Steam downloader, do I have to update or does Steam do it on it's own?

Heh, you're 100% correct... It's F-6 for auto-save. And get this - on a fresh restart I didn't get a pause. Memory leak?????

I'm having the stuttering problems also, gonna try a HD defrag and the suggested (-heapsize 512000 +cl_smooth 0 ). Also, my refresh seems to be locked at 60 Hz. I have the refresh force enabled in the catalyst settings, but it isnt working. Is there a console command or a setting in the menu that I missed for setting the refresh rate?


Edit: After defraging and adding "-heapsize 512000 +cl_smooth 0 " my refresh is now at 85Hz (weird) and the stuttering seems to happen less frequently now, gonna play a bit and see how it is.

Edit 2: Setting my speakers to 4 in the half life audio menu fixed the majority of my stuttering.

Answering my own question... Steam default is to update on it's own. I found this when right-clicking HL2 and selecting properties.

This really sucks because I assume that stuttering was fixed with my card after modded bios because I have no stuttering in CS:S and Far Cry.

It never ends.

I seems to me that most people here have audigy 2 cards. May be it's audigy 2 driver problem.

creative needs to update their drivers more often. Those bastards are so lazy.

i had sound stuttering problems and the only thing that improved it was setting my texture detail to medium instead of high

switching over to 2 speakers might do it in the audio settings.
