So according to a thread i read on steampowered, if you installed HL 2 via the steam client (download), you should defrag your harddrive. the steam install process results in horribly fragmented files. I've done this on my machine and its all but eliminated my stuttering.

I could never fix it, just played through the whole game with it. It wasn't THAT bad, but still annoying.

It wouldn't be a problem really if it only happened during saves, that's sorta understandable.

well. it is in and around loading /saves. so, it was kinda annoying. But many people (self included) were/are having problems with it at other points in the game. I tried a variety of fixes --see above--that reduced it to some degree.

Running on 9700np with 4.12 betas, and latest NF2 drivers with Athlon XP1700 @ 2Ghz and 512MB ram. I think increasing to 1gig would smooth the rest of the occasional hiccups

I think it's obivous it's a RAM thing guys. The sound stuttering only occurs when saving, and lowering texture detail helps the problem....well, textures eat up your RAM. I think the stuttering is just the engine commandeering some memory to save your game with for a few seconds.

I wouldn't be surprised to find this problem is lessened for folks with 1 GB, and almost nonexistant for folks with 1.5+ GB.

I used to get a slight but noticeable stutter during the autosave, but that was alleviated after a Defrag and setting the heapsize to a very large number.
Now, I seem to just get a barely noticeable stutter during autosave sequences... that's it. No other stuttering.
Anyone tried experimenting with AGP Aperture values?

You are mistaken. Read through the links provided.
There are folks with 2GB+ of RAM and it still stutters for them.

problem is some people are mistaking the "HL2 Stuttering Problem" with the pauses you get at the Autosave points.

me, for example. I have 1 GB of ram and an ATI Radeon with 128mb - no stuttering except at autosave points ONLY.

it'd be interesting to find out what was the one common factor in all of the systems that have the true "stuttering" issue.

Does steam update the game automatically? This is so I wont waste my time fishing through sites for a game patch.

Go to that website (for the third time) and stop speculating as to what is the problem. Valve acknowledged and fixed it, case closed, patch soon.

And I noticed that website well before anyone brought it up on this thread... the point is that there are some people running the game at visual settings which do stress their video card AND especially its framebuffer, who do NOT get this problem.

If you have the problem do this:

Drop your settings down to the lowest res, texture, sound, etc.

And wella!

..you may still have the problem! (I did)

Not completely, no.

There are a bunch of half-assed solutions posted at the Steam forums. They don`t count, since they`re not official fixes.
