I also set textures to medium, which helped considerably, but its still there....pissing me off. I'll try every combo of settings to see what works best and let you guys know.

lowering the texture detail from high to medium cleared almost all my stuttering I'm pretty amazed at how fluid it runs on my computer
Running on 9700np with 4.12 betas, and latest NF2 drivers with Athlon XP1700 @ 2Ghz and 512MB ram. I think increasing to 1gig would smooth the rest of the occasional hiccups

yeah, running it 1280x1024 w/ Barton 3200+, 512PC3200, 256mb 9800xt, MSI K7n2 Delta, and I have stuttering problems... at one point it got so bad that I had to stop. restarting my computer and turning off all background programs helped a bit.

despite the problems, the game is still awesome. so much more enjoyable than doom 3 ever was, x100000^5.

I'm having these problems too - it seems every 10-20 seconds the audio will stutter. I only went through the first level long enough to step off the train, since I'm probably going to go ahead and play HL1 Source before I jump into HL2. I'm running at 1024x768, highest settings, have a 6800GT, etc. It's not a framerate problem, because it seems to be fluid (or at least fast) everywhere.

I wonder, would it help to have Steam in offline mode?...

I have an nForce2/AMD/9800pro and absolutely no stuttering. I left HL2 with mainly the default settings except I am running at 1280x1024. I was using 2x AA for awhile but realized that certain scenes rendered slowly under 2x AA and turned it back off. My sound is set to headphones as I'm using headphones. I havn't put in any console tweaks. Don't know if this helps.

Set to 4 speakers, medium audo quality, added the launch options... still happens. When I first ran the game it stuttered even during the initial speech given by mr. weirdo. Closing all programs that were running helped some, but not much. It's not only on auto saves for me. It's similar to doom 3 when it would load sounds or animations. If there's a big explosion or event, it stutteres a bit.

I dropped my sound settings to medium and now it only stutters for a few seconds right after a new level loads.

it is noticable if you switch back and forth between them, but not while you are playing the game. it still looks good

dropped the sound quailty to "Basic", updated to nForce Beta drivers, and added the launch lines... shuddering virtually nil now.

Okay, it still shudders during saving and around loading.

ALSO: occasionally. it *reboots* during quicksave

saving HL2 is mostly the prob.

It's definitely during saving for me - autosave is the annoying one (unexpected at times). It doesn't happen when loading - it's after loading that an autosave occurs, hence stuttering.

Btw, I have Audigy 2, 6800 GT & 1GB RAM - this ain't a problem from lack of hardware (and I doubt it's a driver issue).

I never thought about the auto save. That makes sense. All of a sudden my game just stops cold and freezes. My hard drive light goes on, then a few seconds later back to normal. That's a suspense killer.

I have the issue too, whenever I blow up an exploding oil drum or when I save.

System: P4 2.0A Northwood, 1GB PC2100 DDR, Radeon 9600XT, SB Audigy 1, DX9.0C, WinXP SP1a. The Audigy driver is fairly old, but it's the latest one Creative put out for it.

Count me in on this problem.

I'm running Windows XP Sp2
A64 3200
1g of ram
MSI K8N Neo
Leaktek 6800 GT
Latest drivers, using onboard audio codec.

Doesn't sound like anyone has a sure-fire fix... most annoying.
I'll try the "-heapsize 512000 +cl_smooth 0" and see if it has any effect.

I have the short auto-save freeze like everybody else, everything else is smooth as silk, no stuttering, loss of sync, NADA. Me thinks you guys have sound driver intrusion problems, switch to on/brd sound after dumping your sound drivers and check it out, what do you have to lose. Enjoy the game with YOU in-charge, not your hardware.

I, too, only get it when saving/autosaving.

however, i haven't defragged my HD in months. i'm going to do that now, and maybe investigate alternate defrag programs so i can find one where it allows me to move all the HL2 gcf files to the front of the disk.
