HL2 has better graphics than Doom3.

Now let's make this clear that this isn't about gameplay or fun factor in a game. It's purely about graphics.

I went back to play Doom3 yesterday and it was so ugly. I love the look of Doom3, the dark, industrial atmosphere -LOVE IT! But the graphics do suck. The characters are so blocky and the textures so blurry that it's not immersive anymore. And the lips trying to form the sounds of the words in the game just sucks.

HL2 has spoiled me with their excellent facial models and much less blocky character models. I say that HL2 has better graphics than Doom3 because, I can play HL2 and still consider the graphics modern, but not necessarily so with Doom3.

EDIT: The lighting is something else though, nothing short of amazing. Overall, though HL2 takes the cake. I don't like the look of HL2 however, but the cutscenes of Doom3 are pretty bad too.

agreed

though the lighting in doom 3 is top notch, just about everything else is ass. I especially dislike the crappy physics and static environment. We'll have to see what other developers can do with the engine (prey for one)

can't agree . . . i hate D3 but really liked the gfx . . . the characters are weak but the lighting is superb . . . HL2 is just "prettier"

and i am looking forward to games using the D3 engine in an outdoor environment . . . with improved HW of course.

Not to mention the sound. Doesn't the Doom3 engine come with built in sound, whatever? Cause it freakin sucks, worst game sound in a while. Absolutely god awful, the shotgun sound makes me sick

it started that way . . . didn't they however decide to finally use Creative's EAX? . . . best sound i have heard is in the Thief series [period]

Yeah, I didn't really like HL2 graphics for some reason. The surfaces of everything just looked too "painted on". *shrug*

I think they are good and bad in thier own ways. I one is better look from one perspective one is better in another.

Sorry, have to disagree, COMPLETELY DISAGREE on this one. When I started playing Doom3 I knew it was a new engine, it looked like nothing I had ever seen. But when I started playing HL2, I knew it wasn't a whole new engine, it looked like Half-Life 1. The people had prettier faces, the environments were larger, but the actual technical aspects of the engine seemed so similar to the HL1 I was used to. I remember noticing how flat all the walls were right off the bat.

And I will say, that I know Doom3 has low textures and HL2 has much higher textures, but I do not view textures as a sign of better graphics. Infact I often wonder why the artists at Id overlooked something so goddamn simple as textures in so many aspects of there game. It is so clear that few people can look beyond them.

Also, do you have any proof that HL2 has more poly's per character than Doom3. I'd be willing to bet it is the other way around considering most of the clothing items in HL2 were extremely simplistic in comparison to the armor and enemies in Doom3 which was all very high poly.

Infact, I will add this. When I see a new game like Gears of War, I don't compare it's graphics to HL2, I compare them to Doom3, because it is much closer comparison than the other way around.

Yeap, the imps look waay better than those zombies in HL2.

The graphics looked better in the Alpha/Beta of Doom3 than they do in the final product. I think it had something to do with system requirements.. they toned stuff down so that it would work better on older hardware.

I like the look and feel of the game in HL2 much better. It does look a bit like the HL engine, but it's been much improved and still runs smooth on very low system configs. Just imagine what their tech could be like if they actually maxed out current or next gen specs.

The lgihting engine in Doom is so computationally intensive that they had to cut graphics elsewhere. It's eveolution versus revolution. in terms of graphics only, Doom 3 is more revolutionary than HL2.

But overall, the graphics in HL2 probably are better. Understanding why though, might make you reconsider.

Lol, I can't argue that. But in this case, much less blocky also translates into much more flat . Doom3 took a lot of things away from the flatness people still expect. But not always in the best manner. I think Quake4 and Prey will demo this aspect of the engine better from what I've seen of videos / screenshots.

The lighting in doom3 is nothing short of amazing.

I think Valve squeezed every bit out of an inferior engine (great texture work, awesome envirnoment design and attention to detail) whereas doom3 I don't think we've seen the full potential of the engine yet.

The shadow system in HL2 is pretty weak actually, even if it wasn't so buggy that it routinely went through walls its still nothing special compared to doom3s. The only thing that might be better than doom3 is fear in that regard.
