HL2 Lost Coast benchmark not right

I have a x1800xt 512, A8N32, Opty 170 and 2G ram. Nothing is overclocked.

That's actually a pretty normal score if you used high AA/AF at 12x10.

You also have to remember that Lost Coast has a lot of purdy things going on. Regular HL2\CS:S\Mods will run much better.

they probably used a different run to benchmark. but yeah those are some good frame rates.

I set my timing to 2-3-3-6 and then set the refresh to 75hz. then i dled the new ati drivers. now i get 75 fps, not 85. what happened to this crazy score? then i rolled back the driver, still got 75. setting the timing made no difference. plus now I have flickering and everything seems to shimmer. is my system too hot? what refresh rate should I apply? was the first 85 fps a fluk? please help.

ps i also added SP2, could that be the problem?

It depends on what timedemo is run. The Lost Coast video stress test doesn't seem to use HDR (from my experience) so performance is better. In-game time demos would be more stressful.

If you turned Vsync on, then the framerate will be clamped to your refresh rate.

I run the stress test (lost coast), everything to the max, 1280 x 1024. no vertical sync. I get averge 73 fps. Every once in a while, I get higher fps but a pink/purple glow in the sand and on walls. I dl-ed the newest drivers. refresh rate is 85. nothing is overclocked. what is wrong? I also get flashing and flickering on startup and intro into game.

ps. i have a seasonic 500W s12, which is suppose to handle even SLI. But one of my friends says it looks like a PSU problem.

Looks fine to me. How are your 3DM05/06 scores? If those complete with no stability problems and acceptable scores, I wouldn't worry. And you haven't answered the most important question: how do you like playing Lost Coast with HDR??

Whoah I see what you mean with the color. I ran the test at 1280*1024, 2x/4x, HDR on, and I got 75.95 fps with my X800XT PE. But there was this purple on the rocks and windows that should have been dark instead. Without AA, it benchmarked fine and looked normal. I say it's a driver problem.

Edit, actually now I get weird color even with AA off. I know that didn't used to be there the first few times I played through LC. I just played through it again with 2x/4x, high everything, HDR. There was some weird coloring on the rocks in the beginning, but after that everything was normal (I think).

Anyway, it's definitely a compatibility thing with the driver, or another bogus update that Valve made to Source. Definitely not something to worry about.

Are the new ATI drivers bad? Also when I bring up the catylst control center, the menu has 'see through' boxes for a few seconds and then you can read the icons. What is wrong? The original drivers do the same. This is a new development.

ps. on my old drive, with the same updates, this does not happen. Guess ill have to do benchmarks on both new and old drives.

I'm not using the CCC. I also swapped in my new X1800XT, and I'm not getting any issue anymore with Lost Coast. The "see through" windows is probably just an intentional effect?

You mentioned you set refresh rate to 75.... I hope you're using a CRT....

The purple is a generic shader used to substitute for a missing shader. It is commonly caused in Source games when changing settings without restarting the application. Restarting the application fixes the issue, I run into it all the time testing drivers with "source" games.

Another question. Just went through the demo with everything thing to the max, 1280 x 1024, no vert syc, HRD. When I run the nechmark, get 73 fps average. When I get a lot of enemies on the screen I get a lot of lag, like I was playing with my old 9600xt. I have a x1800xt 512. This thing should run this game like a knife through butter, it's 2 years old! What's the problem? I hope my system will run elder scrolls.
