Hmmm.. humming laptop charger...

The charger on my Inspiron 8500 started humming today. Very slight buzzing...

I already tried different plug points, and tightened the wires... no improvment...

Is this is a sign that things are going to go bad?

btw...Is works fine ... so far.

The hum is only there when it is plugged into the laptop. If powered on and not plugged in, there is no hum..

Dell has recalled (Oct 8th) over 1m laptop charger due to a FIRE HAZARD. You might want to check out their site to see if yours is a problem.

IIRC, it does not affect the 8500 series.

Laptop chargers, being switchmode power supplies, have a transformer or two with a waveform at a few kilohertz being run through them. In all likelyhood, the transformer in yours isn't potted quite as well as it used to be, and it is now physically oscillating in tune with its magnetic field. This is annoying, certainly, and might possibly be a sign of further degradations to come; but it should, in itself, be entirely harmless. I've had various transformer based widgets that hummed away happily enough for years.

its normal, my stupid motorala cell phone charger does the same thing, and you'd expect better quality buying only from the damn parts they sell, that are supposed to be better than 3rd party parts, bite my shiny metall @$$ motorola, oh, please excuse my rant

I checked... my adapter is not in the recall list....

It stopped humming on its own a few weeks ago, either that, or i have learnt to block it out
