I don't remember his name, but I do remember one fairly attractive hoarder... he was freaking out about his dog and saving all of its shedded hair?

he was in his early twenties, his alcoholic dad lived with him. besides all the dog hair, they pulled out a crap load of wine/liquor bottles

That kids was full of issues. And just to make his life that much more difficult, I believe he was gay and in a relationship with an older man (which I am sure his dad just loved).

My mother is/was a hoarder. ...

After purchasing it from her, I told her she has 6 months before I started work (renovating the property). She had all that time to go through it. 9 months later, she finally finished getting out the most of her important things ...

You're a good person for giving her the time to go through everything. I'm not a certified hoarder, but I keep a lot of stuff. I have some sympathy for the hoarders when the family/helpers come in and start grabbing things to take away. I would get pretty anxious too if someone started going through my things like that. Granted, these people have put themselves in the situation and didn't utilize the time they had before the cameras arrived. But still...I feel their pain.

You should not feel sorry for them for that reason. Every hoarder who appears on that show has had family tried to help them a number times over a period of years, if not decades. They only get on the show as the last resort before losing their homes or this children.

That is the craziest part - Even through they know they will lose their home or their children if they do not throw stuff out, they still refuse. It is a serious mental problem - That iw why I feel sorry for them - they cannot help themselves.

My dad's basement was pretty much unlivable when we had a house. Now he lives in my condo and likes to hoard garbage and crap other people throw away. A bench, exercise bike, stroller (wtf??), coffee tables, etc. Christ, he's forgetting this is my place, not his lol. Can't wait til he moves back to his own apartment.

Seems like both of you have the same problem.

I would not allow it to even start in my place and would have no problem throwing stuff out if it began.

I hoard paper if it's not printed on one side because it's an habit I took up when I was little and needed it to draw.
Now I hoard it to do drawings for physics exercises. But after I use it, or when I'm doing a general clean up I trash it all without problems. So yeah, not really a hoarder.
I fear I'm a money hoarder though, I can't spend my money, I don't want to take the decision that leads to buying something.

I followed that rule until I ended up throwing out all my winter clothes in October when I hadn't worn my snowshoes in 6 months

You may want to tweak time if you live in poor climate areas. Say 1 year to cover all your seasons.

I personally tweak mementos. Like my dad gave me a watch when I graduated college I never wear but can't toss.

Plan is not set in total stone - but I found through yrs of experience if I don't use something in 6 mo I never will and it needs to go.

Never met a hoarder have you?

We tried trashing a hoarder's stuff one time. It was just a shitload of scrap metal like lawn mower motors, tubes, etc., but damn did he freak out. Fucker had a total break down, ran all over the house, up and down the stairs, slammed the door a few times, threatened to kill a few people in the house a few times, paced a bit more, muttered, went to check on the rest of his trash. Finally, to calm him down, mom paid the dipshit (if you haven't figured out it's pops yet...) like $700 in cash. He goes quiet after that: all sins forgiven.

Think about if someone came into your house and trashed/stole all your electronics. They feel that way about their entire pile.

That would be sad and disappointing to me. But I don't think I would threaten to kill someone. My old-school console video-game collection, on the other hand...

There is a hoarder that lives on the same street as my gf in NYC. He has a huge old rape van stuffed to the brim with crap, flat tires and like... a huge tarp bungee'd down across the top with crap stuffed under it too. I dunno if he lives in there (don't think its possible), nor do I know how he evades parking laws constantly. I mean.. there is alternate side parking... the van hasn't moved in the 6 months I've been there.

I liked the original concept of the show, but people never hoarded anything specific and it was all just trash. After the third time or so of watching them find nothing but nasty rotten food I stopped watching it.

Watching a show about someone hoarding specific items, or types of things, would be one thing, but with most episodes being nothing but people who can't throw away trash or rotting food turned me off. If I wanted to watch that I could just go to any number of "relatives" homes. I just don't consider that hoarding; I just call it being nasty. Squirrels hoard nuts. Disgusting people are just too lazy to throw anything away, and then it becomes too difficult to find a place to start cleaning, so they never do (those I have experience with anyway).

EDIT: I find most episodes of American Pickers to generally be a more interesting show about hoarding.
