I'll admit i know very very little about hockey, practically nothing besides the fact that it looks a lot like soccer on ice. I'm just curious why they never use a fat guy to cover the goal instead of a skinny dude with quick hands?

players would get shots past him in SECONDS.

really? not that im disagreeing, but i just figure that the sumo sized guy would have his own advantage too...taking up about 80% of the goal space, or maybe much less just a guesstimate.

Hockey goalies must be much more mobile than people would expect. While a large person would take up the majority of the net, they wouldnt help the team out in any other way (playing the puck, etc)

I play hockey goalie, and people ask this question every 5 minutes.

ah yes i forget that they needa gather the puck when they are alone with it (after being knocked all the way to its side). good point: a goalie just doesn't "guard" the net.

right. Goalies also need a lot of endurance, since they play the entire game without a break. Sombody that isnt in good shape wouldnt do well at all.

Most of the problem with being a goalie in my experience didn't lie with the puck being more than 12 inches above the ground on the average, he might have an easy time with pucks flying higher being wide and fat but those weren't a huge problem when I played hockey maybe 1 out of 5 shots were above a foot or two in height by the time they reached me... so unless your sumo has feet like Ronald McDonald he won't have much of an advantage and even then I'd doubt it would help him much.. in the professional version I'm sure those shots occur all the time but it wouldn't matter too much in the long run.. your control and speed with the stick and on the ice will make you a better goalie.. and speed and sumo don't usually don't end up in the same sentence

I was pretty large for a goalie 180lb's at 11 years old (kiddie hockey sumo heh) :Q I played it when I was a kid so maybe I'm out of my league so to speak but the only reason I was a good goalie was because I was quick, accurate with my passes and had fast reflexes not because I had the girth of a Yugo LOL

Edit: hehe watch the Mighty Ducks.. haha their big goalie looks just like I did back then

Why don't they hire Kung-Fu masters instead? They would be able to play with their eyes closed and it would look cool

What if you could find a guy that could cover the entire net? Then the other team would never score.

I think Samurai Master's would be a better choice.. they would be used to all the shields and padding and crap getting in their way, not to mention that damn facemask which made me sweat like a faucet... only bad memory I have of Hockey...

As someone else said...most shots are low. They can be anywhere from right on the ice to 1-2" below the knee. If you got a bif fat guy that covered the whole net, his legs and feet would not. It would be easy to shoot it through, or under him, before he could even think of reacting.

Endurance...yep.

Imagine a 400lb barrell ass trying to play 65 or so games a year(about the avg for an NHL starting goalie), 60 minutes each, often on back to back nights. At the end of the season ,if he isnt dead, he'd BE a skinny guy.

watch a game once and you'll understand.

Or you could just get some guy that was so incredibly fat and huge that he still covered the net while sitting on the ice

I Coach hockey and most players have uncanny accuracy. They would put a sunburn on the back of the big fat blobs neck in no time. Heck, even Peewee's would make a sieve out of him.

Like others have said, most shots are lower to the ice to up the percentage of being redirected or tipped into the net. This is why there are very few successful standup goaltenders in the professional ranks anymore.

With the absurd equipment goalies wear today, its the same as being big and fat. The practice of wearing a tent for a jersey and having 2 sofas strapped to your legs will be looked at very closely in the offseason.
