115 million, you got to be kidding me....

sure. It destroyed hogans reputation. after this video came out WWE scrubbed anything to do with him. They cancelled events and publications.

It cost him a LOT of money. 115 million does not seem to far off.

Also after reading about the comments the head of gawker made during the trail i feel it should have been more. totally bankrupt them.

I don't buy his excuse of joking about posting videos of 5+ yr olds. that's not something you joke about in a trial

A Judge told them to take it down and they refused. They set themselves up for it.

I get it however

According to the unsealed documents, Clem told the FBI that Hogan was aware he was being recorded before backpedaling on that claim in subsequent depositions.
Related: Hulk Hogan awarded $115 million in Gawker sex tape case
"Hulk knew," Clem told federal agents, saying there was "an obvious camera in play."
The unsealed records also suggest that Heather Cole was aware she was being recorded, contradicting her sworn testimony.
"I tried to get past the pain and enjoy it," she is quoted telling Clem in one of the DVDs. "You'll probably see my face squirming."

That's an interesting wrinkle to this. Not sure how I feel about that. Mostly I'm ok since he didn't seem to do anything particularly nefarious beyond putting up money and helping find good quality lawyers, but it could present some troubling prospects in the future, especially seeing how many governments have been moving to stifle press freedom (absolutely a major valid complaint about Obama is the lack of transparency that has permeated throughout government, and frankly both Hilary and Trump are likely to be even worse, possibly much much worse).

Debate? WTF? That makes no sense whatsoever. Wow, its easy to see why Gawker is such a shitty company with such a shit for brains running it.

Rofl. How exactly is Theils doing anything wrong? If Gawker hadn't done something incredibly questionably outside the law, they wouldn't have gotten sued in the first place.

Nick Denton just put out an open letter to Thiels. Challenged him to a debate

http://gawker.com/an-open-letter-to-peter-thiel-1778991227

A gay man telling a gay man that a third gay man was justified in outing him because he accrued more wealth. That's rather astonishing. Yeah, Denton has a really hard time knowing when to shut up.

I don't know what's worse, thinking that it's okay to reveal someone's sexual orientation because it could lead to positive attention or actually believing that Thiel's success had anything to do with said revelation.

I don't buy anything Denton says. Certainly not after they outed that Conde Nast CFO and helped his blackmailer make good on his threat in the process over a story that wasn't even remotely newsworthy. I don't like Thiel but I like Denton even less. He's just getting what he had coming.

I totally agree with this. It's a very problematic situation.

As certain somebodies love to remind us, Gawker has freedom of speech, but they don't have freedom from the consequences of that speech.

Time to die, Gawker.

Remember, this is the same group of people that will readily destroy somebody's livelyhood because they said something that may have hurt somebody's feelings on the internet. Now they're crying because that sword cuts both ways.

Reading the comment responses on Ars left me baffled. I can't believe how many people were going "gawker is shit, but Gizmodo is good". Gizmodo is right in line with the rest of the gawker shit. There was that time they fucked with companies' presentations at CES (I think they used an IR blaster to fuck with like powerpoint type stuff), the stolen iPhone case, and some of the other shit they did that I've forgotten about.

I totally agree with this. It's a very problematic situation.

Its a weird situation. Takes a billionaire to be able to front the cost of putting up a good case against a large (but hardly massive) corporation in what is basically a slam dunk case. Sad state of our legal system. But the chilling affect of having to have lots of money to be able to bring worthwhile cases against rich entities is alarming.
