Try Win key + D or Win key +M.

So I can press Window key plus d and then double click a small desktop icon. Or.
I can press Window key, and single click a larger tile on the start screen.

It is a minor difference, but I find it just easier to use the start screen.

First brief history.

I've been using windows/dos since the very first versions. Vax/VMS on the job before that. I ran OS2 Warp for a time. And of course MacOS, Linux and Solaris. I'm a solaris/storage guy during the day. So I've been around a few operating systems going back 20+ years.

I just bought my mom a new laptop and it came with Windows 8.

After 2 weeks of running the gambit I'm just floored at how awful Windows 8 is. Man. Give me Windows ME or Vista over this rubbish. Holy cow. I finally ripped it off and put on a hacked copy of Windows 7 after Dell refused to swap my restore CD with a Windows 7 one. (Even offered to pay for it)

Just baffled at what Microsoft was thinking. You would think they learned their lesson with Vista.

Anyone else just shocked at this version?

Dude, you don't know the half of it. Windows 8 is a nightmare. What I don't understand is WHY there is anyone at all that defends it and prefers to use it.

get Start 8,Object Dock and Modern Mix to get Win 7 functionality with Win8.
$15 more but you get what you want, Start button, Task Bar and windowed apps for Metro programs.

Why bother, when there's Win 7?

Have they ever stated that the Modern Interface style _wasn't_ going to replace the desktop?

It's just that to me it looks troublingly like the desktop has now been relegated to an obscure 'geeks only' specialist app, very much like the way the DOS command line was side-lined to a special mode back when Windows itself first appeared (not that _that_ particular side-lining was a bad thing). It doesn't really look like 'works alongside', when the OS boots into Metro and the desktop just appears as one app amongst many.

Its not a huge leap to suspect that the next step they would _like_ to make (if they can get away with it) is to try and get rid of it altogether.

So true. 100% Agreed

Because I got it for next to nothing (vs dropping at least a C note on Win7 and WinXP each), have no attachment to the Start menu, and otherwise it looks good and runs well?

It's not a question of defending Win8,in my case I like several different operating systems from DOS to Windows to Linux.

As to Win7 I could say why bother with Win7 when you have Linux?..Only gamers would need Windows.
End of the day Win8 is fine and works well for me just like my Linux distros and my previous Windows operating systems.

Remember just because you don't like it does not make it right or wrong, different viewpoints etc...
I expect this debate will carry over to Win9,10,11 etc ,always does.
