Was looking for a good computer builder (cousin in another state needs a system), and most of u guys recommend alienware.......but holy crap there xpensive. I went over and congiured an athlon xp 1900 system with a radeon 8500, 512mb pc2100, 80gb 7.2k rpm drive, 24xcd-rw, 16xdvd and came up to a total of $2400! AND THATS WITHOUT TAX AND SHIPPING! I went over to newegg and tried to see how much it would cost me to build, I came up to $1400 w/tax/s&H!!!!

Any good cheap vendors that dont charge outrageous prices??????? I really dont mind assembling this system, its just that I cant support it half across the country.

OEMS have to make a profit some how, especially Alienware who doesnt ship many systems. Just build it yourself, modern parts dont have that many stability problems past the first few days if set up right. Just use Ghost to make a recovery disk for him if he messes something up.

Or... if thats too much work... get an emachine. ha.

you're paying for their tried and tested system and parts. You're also getting 3 years warranty from alienware if I'm not mistaken. Premium price, premium product.

I know Alienware fine tunes their stuff, so you're getting a pretty stable and decent performing computer...and since they're heavily focused on gaming, you can be sure that their numbers will almost always be better than something a newbie can slap together.

I've seen their systems, and although expensive, if I had the money, and if I didn't have any knowledge, I'd probably get it. But since I don't have the money, and I DO have the knowledge, I'm not. simple as that.

FYI: AMD XP 1700+ (slightly overclocked) Asus K7V266-E Raid, Geforce2 Ti (260core/460mem), Enermax 710B, Plextor 24/10/40, DVD, ThermalTake Dragon Orb3, Dynamatted interior.

Although they might "tweak" their systems and what not, I wouldn't expect an alienware system to be any faster then a home built system.

I've seen people talking about getting Alienware on this forum before. I don't know where you get the idea that Anandtech folks recommend Alienware. Knowing the people here, they would say, yeah, they are overly expensive and you'd be better off rolling your own for half the price. That's consistent with past discussions. Alienware is only good for people with deep pockets and no brains.

Pffft... even Falcon NW is expensive as hell, though not as bad as AlienWare. I just built my own complete super sys for between 1900 and 2100 with nice monitor and speakers, where the same thing cost 3500 on FNW. Granted a lot of the parts were used... but I'm just a smart shopper!

This reminds me of when a friend of mine that works at Best Buy decided to customize an Alienware computer while at work. He put everything thinkable on it, and the total price came out to be $18,000+ :Q

check pc shopper or any local free computer magazine like computer user,
you'll find many white box pc makers (dell is also a white box pc maker) ad,
and reviews.
alienware is not the one recommended.
