I know this is meaningless to you guys, but everyone that would care is asleep.

I am an executive recruiter by trade.

I have been working with a client company on the West coast for months. They have not interviewed anyone that I have sent in, despite some stellar credentials. I just checked my office email. They want to talk to the guy I sent in on Friday. This is only the first step on a long process, but you gotta start somewhere. This is abolut a $20k+ deal if it happens, for those that are curious.

Thanks for sharing my little celebration!

Used to be one myself. My biggest month was 22K in commissions (three placements). Good luck!

Russ, NCNE

PS: Bet you didn't think you'd find anybody hanging here that knew, firsthand, about your job.

Being an executive head-hunter can be a very lucrative field.. A family friend is one such. Just in 2 years she has placed herself in a worry free financial future and shes only ~40 with a not-working-husband and young child to through school and college. Shes never 'advertised' either which is the funny part...

DaejangNim,

First, you must know a particular field very well. You must be articulate, and quick on your feet - conversationally. Then, you need to have a lot of contacts in your field, or be willing to cold call your ass off until you do.

For me it was a friend in the business and a willingness to take the risk.

Russ - I'm a little surprised, yes.

The people that make the big money do not earn a salary (no big money, yet but this is my deal). You are straight commission. Russ was right about $20k plus months. I have seen people knock down over $40k gross in a month. The same guy didn't make a cent for the next three. You have to plan well and be willing to place your tool on the cutting block. Great business for single people or people in their late 40's with a lot of connections. There os a lot of money there but it ain't easy to make.

A little advice because a lot of the members on this board probably use online job boards when looking. Companies hire people that are 65% qualified the rest is chemistry.

A headhunter will only reply to you if you are an almost perfect fit for the job in question. I hate not replying to everyone, but I get literally 200 resumes everyday, most of which are not even close to what I am looking for. I have never placed a "Monster" candidate (or any other board for that matter). Companies pay me the knid of money in question to steal from their competitors.

Sorry - I didn't mean to turn this into a lesson on headhunting.

Yep, it is not a profession for one with bad budgeting skills. But, damn, talk about a high when you nail a big one!

Been an office admin/technical recruiter for a few years and GOSH DO I HATE PROCESSING EMAILED RESUMES!!! If they're a mass mailing, instant delete, every recruiter in the world has your resume. What's your fav search site? Monster's good but every HR department uses it. A lot of our clients don't even want us to send in a resume off monster; they figure they pay us for direct recruiting. Personally I still like Dice.

I post ads on Monster, Headhunter , and a few that my company owns. I never send in a Monster resume. I always get a Word document from the candidate. I had a financial services guy that did not have resume. This cat was coming off a 2 year contract with a guaranteed minimum payout of $400k. I wound up making one for him. (Didn't place him EEERRRR)

I really have very little luck with the monster, et al candidates with the exception of one sales position I recruit for.

Yeah, it amazes me how people just indisriminately send out their resume. I try to make my friends understand what that does. Your resume represents probably 1/2 of your adult life. That should be sacred. Only someone you trust should have it. You should know every company/organization that is in possession of your personal/confidential information.

All the head hunters I've ever met have been lying bastards!

I doubt you are though

Geeze, so you guys have no success with monster either? I don't know anybody who has gotten a job with one (ok slight exageration). In fact a person can scour job boards for months and get nothing out of it. Why is it that these job boards are so farkin useless?

Just looked at monster, they had a total of 7 jobs listed nationally for Mechanical Engineering, that's pathetic.

Anyone want to hire a 4.0 mechanical engineer from RPI?

Depends on your grades from big name school. but better grades will probably serve you better. There are those that argue that the network you can develop at a big name school will help you more. That is also something to consider.

GPA will carry you far in your first job. After that, it is all about performance. The education is reduced to a piece of paper.

Good luck!

what sector or industry are you recruiting for? Does experience with one of the big 5 firms a positive or a negative? I've heard mixed reactions, more specifically in regards to management positions there. Just curious on your take there.

Im currently posted in a risk management position with a big 5 firm.

my father used the executive search quite extensively...not one stayed for more than a year...

My father found out, most people are quite intelligent, but they seem to find shortcuts or try to play "smart" at work.

Needless to say, the only executives at his company are people who worked up the ladder.

edit: How can I forget?! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOpe ALL goes well~!

Hmm,

What's the deal with Word Docs? As a recruiter do you suggest we not email a document? If so would a fax be better or should we send it in via the mail?

LMK, still looking for a job but having no luck with call backs lately.
