Holy Crap I Passed

Well I took my first giant step toward a career change today when I passed the first actuarial exam on my first try. It's been 7 years since I graduated college so it took me a while to get the hang of studying but I did it. It was by far the toughest exam I have ever taken in my life but a little easier than I thought it would be.

Hooray for school! Hooray for me!!!

Anybody know of anyone hiring actuaries???

Doesn't the big bucks start at the later levels, the tests get exponentially harder towards the end.

Give me a few details on P1. How many questions? Is it all probability? Did you study on your own or did you take classes?

30 questions = 3 hrs.
All probability and calculus.
I started studying on my own in July and used 2 manuals: Dr Guo's manual and the ASM manual.

Is it just Pass/Fail? Or are there percentiles

The computer just told me that I passed but in Nov I will find out my raw score. 1-10 where 6+ is passing.

I don't know but it doesn't matter 'coz companies still only care about if you pass a paper.

The American can tell you how many people will die in the next year and the Italian one can name them!

Actuary. They work with probabilities. Example: The age you're going to die to do the cost of health insurance for companies.

if you are good...you are talking 100K once you get good at the job.

I was a Math major with a double emphasis in statistics and applied mathematics.

Starting 50-75K

3-5 years 75-100K

10+ years I've seen jobs as high as 160-200 K

Considering I make 30 K a year now it will be a slight salary increase
