I've owned several Atom netbooks and nettops.

Single-core Atom with Intel graphics on Linux or XP = Terribad.

Single-core Atom with nVidia graphics on Linux or XP = Terribad.

Dual-core Atom with Intel graphics on Linux or XP = Terribad.

Dual-core Atom with nVidia graphics on Linux or XP = OK, not great, not even good, just OK.

Dual-core Atom with nVidia graphics on Win 7 = Pretty darn good, even better with an SSD. No power house but with 4 threads and Win 7's epic scheduler it works great. Web, email, Flash, 1080p (plays flawlessly), office work - all things which work really well. Not for 3D games but you should know that.

soon to be aunt-in-law dropped off her acer aspire one netbook because her daughters or w/e hosed up the operating system and wants me to do a system restore. i'm dreading the automatic update for it to update to vista SP2 and how long that will take.

everything i install/uninstall on it takes hours to complete D: it's like using a pentium 3. how the hell do people use these? this is also her main machine :thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

they use it because they get free service.
otherwise any tech service taking hours would end up equal to replacement cost in labor hours charged lol

plus, not having to experience the slow crawl of install themselves they don't feel the need to throw it through a window.

you can ebay an old ultraportable, even an original core duo would run circles around an atom.

you don't know how much I appreciate this post, thank you!
I was looking for touchscreen kiosk type computers for one of my employers, and this was what I came up with.

I'll plan on installing 7 pro right from the start. It is a web based app running inside IE, so it should have plenty of horses.

Why would you waste a Windows 7 license for a web app?

Computers like that run much better using embedded operating systems. It's why I've never liked Microsoft's "Windows 7 on tablets" approach.

Vista really should never be installed on Atom systems. They're not fast enough. Windows XP or a netbook specific Linux distro are the best systems for them.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro on my aspire one and it works great... Well I upgraded it to 2 GB Ram.

Yea I looked into them for something small for my shop. But they just did not have enough to justfy the cost for what you got.

The early reviews of AMDs zacate (bobcat) APU looks like it will have enough power to make a decent small system.

These netbooks had such promise. I have yet to run across one worth turning on. I really think Tablets are going to send these poorly designed products to the grave.

Tablets may do that but they really aren't that poorly designed. They were meant to be slow. They were designed to only do a limit number of tasks (mostly web browsing and email) and nothing more. If that is all you use them for they aren't that bad. If you are trying to use them for more then you are using them for tasks that they were not designed to perform. I agree though that tablets are fast catching up and may indeed kill netbooks.

bleh netbooks are already dying, what folks wanted is ultraportable notebooks, and the price of those is coming down.

The wife has a ASUS EEE with Win XP. I'd have a hard time telling the difference between it and my Core Duo 2 because she keeps it set up like the day the OS and Office Suite was installed.

My sister bought a desktop, tower only, from dell 3 months ago and paid $1000. I have no idea what she bought, but I bet when I go over there it'll be like wading through mud. The next piece of freeware she doesn't install will be her first.

i have a dell mini 10v that runs windows vista and now windows 7 just fine. it doesn't take hours to install anything, and i'm able to surf, chat on pidgin and listen to itunes at the same time. for a single core atom processor that ain't too bad.

i installed ubuntu netbook on it, and i think windows 7 runs much better.

If you think a single-core Atom is slow.. wait until you use a tablet with a smart-phone CPU...

They are actually getting pretty fact now. Especially when combined with a light weight OS like android.

Based on my experience with Atom products, this is a pretty good summary. Sometimes Linux with the Atom can be alright, if the right window manager is used. One of the light weight versions, Gnome/KDE are too heavy for the Atom.

My Revo, an Atom 330, Ion, and Win7, isn't too bad. With a clean install of 7, its pretty snappy. Most Flash videos play back decently, but HD Netflix is a no go.

Still putting my new Zacata HP super-netbook through its paces though its clearly faster than my N270 based netbook.

My wife's netbook runs great, but I did remove all the bloatware that came on it

That started here on AT. Somebody had a brainfart and said "BestBuy is suck" instead of "BestBuy sucks" and it just caught on.

Just for the record, it was "Staples is suck".

It's currently gone up to a dual core CPU, and android/ios is optimized to take advantage of low power CPU's that are being used at the moment.

The PSP2 also now has a quad core CPU AND a quad core GPU.

Mobile computing power is increasing at an amazing rate.

I have a single core Atom netbook running Windows 7 Pro and it easily loads Firefox and Word faster than many people's desktops.

Granted it does have a OCZ Vertex 2 SSD but that still shows it's not the processor that's the problem.

They have their uses, mine is used for playing movies on trips and checking in on my son via VLC and IR hacked webcam. Have a server running a D510, fantastic little machine, solid as a rock.

If you are having to install SP2, it did NOT ship that way in its "default" state.

the recovery partition on the netbook restored it to vista w/ SP1. it's definitely the default OS on this netbook and thats how my aunt bought it. I was exaggerating when i said it took 5 min for IE to load. it loads better now that it's done caching everything, but it's still sluggish in general. i removed all the bloat, and its just OK, but i still would not want to use this POS day in day out

Current Atom is POS. Still at 45nm and has b.s. on die memory controller that is connected to to the core with a traditional FSB architecture.
