from last night

The battery meter in OS X is not the best place to get a good read from. Since it is estimating based on current usage.

I once was just reading an ebook on my Air (2010 model), and it said 8 hours. I turned down the screen, and it said 9 or 10. I turned off wifi, and it jumped up to 12.

^^^ I agree, before in the same scenario it would show 11-12 hours or so remaining. Obviously it fluctuates depending on the type of usage but still has been an impressive bump for me from an already great battery life...easily doubles any laptop I've had.

What osx needs is an mpc-hc clone. VLC is still not there.
I personally don't usually use MPC-HC on Windows. I just use Haali Media Splitter with ac3filter with Windows Media Player, in Windows 7. That combo is the most stable and amongst the fastest and reliable, at least for the video files I want to play. Plus, it feels native, because I'm just using WMP. My second choice is vlc. The great thing about WMP is that it uses MS's H.264 codec which is not only GPU accelerated but also ultra stable and faster than most of the free ones out there on lower end GPU hardware.

On Mac OS X, my two go-to apps are vlc and MPlayerX.

My biggest beef with WMP is that their keyboard shortcuts are dumb. In every other media player I've used, SPACE is play/pause. And you can either hit CTRL+F, or double click the video to fullscreen it.

Wow - that's insane. At this point it really feels like anyone who buys a non-Apple laptop is just being willful.

Well, I'm considering a new laptop this holiday season, and at the MBA's price point, I'm choosing between

-Asus Zenbook Infinity
-Sony Vaio Pro13
-Apple MBA 13
-Lenovo Thinkpad X3 (if it gets released in time, looking doubtful. Will probably consider T440 though its a bit bigger)

The biggest advantage the MBA has over any of those is battery life; and if the vaio is any indication of haswell ultrabook battery life, the MBA's advantage in this area is slim to none.

Based on what I've seen of the Zenbook Infinity, if it gets comparable battery performance to the Sony, I can not think of a single reason I would choose the MBA over it.

If you generally work with and have a significant investment in the Windows ecosystem then there is no reason to go with a MBA over your other choices.

If you like working in OS X and you are invested in that ecosystem then there is probably no reason to consider Windows systems.

You have to pick one and go with it unless you really like working inside of VMs, which quite frankly sucks for long termed use.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess I didn't notice it as much because my MS keyboard has a dedicated play/pause, stop/ volume, and mute buttons.

P.S. It also a dedicated Calculator button, which is great.

Having to learn and use OS X is why I haven't bought a Mac laptop. But I'm tempted enough by the battery life of the new Air and Pro that I might finally bite the bullet.

It really doesn't take long. I transitioned about 5 years ago, took me probably a day to fully get to grips with everything. I really struggle to use Windows now, and frankly Windows 8 is virtually unusable for me.

Yeah. I don't mind win 7 but really dislike win 8. Haven't used 8.1
though.

Unless you are also getting the sheet battery with the Vaio Pro 13 you are not going to touch the MBA battery life.

It wasn't too bad to convert. I would say the thing for me was writing to NTFS drives is a pain.

Based on my playing around with my parent's MBP (granted they are still on Lion), I've yet to see anything in OS X that just makes me go "Wow, I need to switch for this feature." Nor is there anything so appalling bad about Windows 7/8/8.1 that makes me want to go out and try OS X.

Unless you are also getting the sheet battery with the Vaio Pro 13 you are not going to touch the MBA battery life.

Even with the sheet battery, it is just as light as the MBA13, so why wouldn't I?

People have different needs, but one of the stand outs on a Mac is its superior trackpad. Windows trackpad is useless.

Its extra money? Also even with a sheet battery the MBA on Mavericks would still get better battery life.

Had no idea there was a sheet battery for the Vaio Pro 13, but boy does it look strange, and boy would it be a pain to carry around.

Thanks but no thanks.

I don't understand the hate for Windows. I have no issues with W7 and it just works as well. On the other hand I bought the new rMBP because of the hardware not the software. Also OSX is still absolute garbage when connecting to SMB shares which is just stupid considering that with Windows and Linux smb works flawlessly.

If I could have the rMBP and Windows 7 but keep the 10.9 battery life I would do it in a heartbeat. There are still a couple things OSX is horrible at after all these years and it's mostly having to do with interacting with other OS'.

I can easily use both and consider myself adept at using them.

Overall I prefer Windows but I'd quite happily buy a Macbook for its superior build quality and screen even if it does run OSX. Doesn't really bother me. All I use is Office, Web Browsers, and VM software. A shame OSX doesn't have VMWare Player. That's a bit of a negative for me (VirtualBox is not in the same league)

How so? the MBP trackpad is a bit bigger, but I don't feel any difference between using it and any other synaptics touchpad on windows systems.

I don't think there's any comparison, and the rest of the world respectfully disagrees with you.

Yeah, people always claim that its 'just better,' and yet, can't say how, specifically. I have no issues pointing the cursor exactly where I want it on a macbook or a wintel laptop with the touchpad.

I will say a lot of bargin bin wintel have a pretty bad texture on the trackpad. Most of the ultrabooks in the MBA price range that I've played with don't suffer from this, however.

All of the touchpads I've used that integrates the click to the pad itself (that includes the macbooks) are pretty mushy and lack travel distance. The best one, in terms of click-feel, that I've used is lenovo's clickpad, but I've only briefly played with their newer thinkpads so I'll hold judgement on it until I've had more time with it. (Our office is ordering a batch of the new T series so hopefully I'll have more experience soon).

So, for pointer precision--I'll give the edge to the MBP since the larger pad gets it closer to 1:1 movement
Texture--Wash between the MBP and the similarly-priced wintels.
Click-feel-- Lenovo > MBP and everyone else.

I tend to disagree quite a bit with the rest of the world, so that's not new to me

Those are at similar pricepoints? If that's the case, get the Infinity, it is better in everything than others. Here, it is way more expensive though.

The VAIO and Zenbook have way better display than MBA or T440, but the T440 is probably the only one of them that you can upgrade. However, Lenovo promised someone to never make laptop with a good screen or something.

Assuming the Infinity is priced the same as the ivy bridge model, Its going to be slightly more ($100 ish) expensive than the MBA. I'll consider that within reason.

The vaio is right in the same range as the 13 inch MBAs.

T440 starts cheaper, but with the crappy 1600x900 display. Yeah, Lenovo seems to drag their feet with upgrading the display. They're a gen late to get on-board with the 1920x1080 displays on their laptops.

According to notebookcheck review [1], in Germany, the Infinity with QHD display and 8G/256G is priced at 1800 €, while MBAs are 1099 (4/128) and 1299 (4/256). While this might not mean much for precise price somewhere else, the relation what is more expensive than what should hold, right?

Now, there should be new non-infinity Zenbook that's probably less expensive, with FHD screen and other lower specs. That would still be better than MBA, unless you really like Mac OS. Which you don't
