Just saw a short on Diesel on ESPN. I had no idea it was so effective. To sum up the whole program:

1) Diesel gives you 30-100% better fuel mileage
2) Diesel burns cleaner
3) Diesel gives you slightly more power
4) Diesel engines last longer
5) Diesel is cheaper (not sure about this last one)

Most of you are going to say - tell us something we didn't know. Well, I had no idea about all that. Apparently most european automakers are going to introduce US versions of diesel cars in 2006. One last roadblock they have is filling stations. Apparently there aren't enough in US and the ones we do have are sell low-grade diesel that's used in trucks and produces all that black smoke.

'kilowatts' means nothing for 95% of driving. the only reason they say that is because power is the same regardless of your gearing, whereas torque is manipulated by gearing (lever effect)

the proper form is "HOLY <something> BATMAN"

so in this case, it would be holy diesel batman, not holybatman diesel.

You get more miles out of an equivalent volume of diesel compared to gasoline, but diesel doesn't burn as clean. However, with new exhaust treatment tech (i.e. post-combustion injection, particulate filtration), diesel can get pretty clean.

My company car is a 1.5l HDi turbodiesel (yes, I know it's small) - only 100bhp, but 200ft lbs of torque - she'll pull from second without a murmur, and pulls up steep hills in fourth at 30mph.

59 miles to the gallon since new - 2,000 miles so far.

It might not be very fast, but when it comes to going easily and quickly uphill, there's nothing much better than a diesel*.

* Unless you have an enormous petrol engine

[Edit] The soot that is produced from a modern diesel when given full throttle has one use though - if someone is tailgating you for a long time. Drop two cogs, boot it up to the redline, and watch them back off

Yup, that's what the mentioned. Out of the box diesel isn't that clean, but with today's technologies it is. They also mentioned that diesel engines were harder to engineer, but that has been already done in europe.

We have a lot of advanced HDi diesels over here (although HDi is just the name that one manufacturer uses - DCi, CDTi, JTDi etc etc - they all mean commonrail diesel), and they've been around for a number of years. Diesels have always taken off quicker over here because of the high fuel prices.

Given the choice between a diesel car and petrol car for my next personally-owned vehicle, it's diesel all the way. No contest, when it comes to my driving style and preference.

According to my trusty thermal physics textbook, "For a given compression ratio the efficiency is actually less than that of the Otto Cycle, but Diesel engines generally have higer compression ratios and hence higher efficiences."

It's great for the purpose that I described, and it's generally recommended to strongly rev a diesel once a day or so, to clear out the soot deposits in the engine. However, my father and I both drive commonrail diesels, and we use Miller's Diesel additive in each fuel tank to increase fuel efficiency, reduce soot buildup (not production!) and generally smooth the throttle response a little, which can be a little jerky with a large turbo that spools up as the peak torque comes on.*

* 1900rpm for my car, a little higher for my fathers'.

Not to sound like I'm looking down my nose at those figures, but is that all?
My father's 2.0l Ford Mondeo TDCi produces a little more than that, and my 1.5l makes 200ft-lbs....?

343Nm @ 2000rpm will shiat all over those (prado figures for the Oz 3 litre model)

I guess the pricing down here is just odd, but diesel is priced the same as the high grade stuff and thus not anywhere near as inexpensive as the low grade that most people buy.

My parents have a 99 MB E300 Turbodiesel. A classy car that is fun to drive while I still get 32mpg. Argo, I've told you this before-get that CDi E320. 230hp/300lb ft of torque. And i believe 4MATIC is no cost now

Yeah, I've noticed that here. I remember when diesel used to be much cheaper, but now it's about the same price as the mid grade my car uses.

Either way, operating costs are much cheaper due to the mileage you get. I'd love to have a diesel, when they become more viable here in the states. Burning so much gas gets expensive.

Um.
Ford's website states that the Duratorq 2.0 TDCi engine (Stage III) produces 130bhp* and 330-350Nm of torque at 1800rpm.

I'd consider that "shiating" all over a three litre engine, personally

* Although apparently on the dyno, this engine is producing something in the region of 145bhp - Ford have under-rated them for some reason. Lord knows why...

[Edit] A quick calculation using an engine power conversion website shows that 343Nm = 253ft-lbs. That's a terrible figure for a three litre engine.
