India is a walking contradiction. The poverty that exists simply cannot be hidden from view. It's side by side with luxurious 5 star hotels and high rise tech buildings.

But I think they are poised to make some serious strides in the coming decades. They are placing a very high value on education and generating a workforce that will be able to tackle their massive infrastructure problems going forward. They definitely have to do something about the out of control population growth too.

Overall though India is a wonderful place to visit. Don't believe the racist and ridiculous comments coming from morons who've never even visited the country. I can go around the slums of America and produce an equally disturbing collection of images.

challenge accepted.
i'll be waiting.

What irritates me is the disconnect relating behavior and problems. Dog problem? Ban killing dogs. Get sick from the water? Keep shitting in the river... This stuff isn't sophisticated science or anything. People should intuitively pick up the association. If it smells bad, it's likely bad; fix it... :^/

The dog thing is problematic because their religion holds a lot of animals and life in general as quite sacred. And without knowing more about their education system, it's quite possible they don't realize the implications of things like throwing bodies and shit in the river. I mean, if you hadn't been taught that feces was unsanitary, I don't know that it would be nearly as obvious as you might think.

On the other hand, they also don't seem to have much else for options anyway.

As much as you may think otherwise, you aren't going to find a whole lot of otheer places where people are just taking dumps all over the place. Until you can get over the simple things....

the fucked up part is some realize it...yet continue the behavior

ickened, I climb back into the rowboat. As we near the tanneries, a dozen boys frolic in the water, splashing in the river's foulest stretch. Jaiswal calls them over.

"Why do you swim in the river?" I ask one of the boys. "Aren't you worried?"

He shrugs. "We know it's poisonous," he says, "but after we swim we go wash off at home."

"Do you ever get ill?"

"We all get rashes," he replies, "but what can we do?"

A HEREDITARY Hindu priest, Veer Bhadra Mishra is wont, shortly after sunrise, to totter down the stone steps of his temple to the Ganges river, and there perform a three-part ritual. He touches the sacred water. He dips himself in it. He cups it in his hands and drinks it.
...
Mr Mishra has contracted typhoid, polio, jaundice and other water-borne ailments. A hydrologist turned environmental activist, he reasonably assumes that his morning devotions are to blame.

I never saw this thread, I don't live on the forums, frankly the fact that it was necro'd actually has become a humbling experience. Very sad to see what other people in the world deal with.. makes you take less stuff for granted here in the U.S.

Where do you live that's so much better?

I'd say pretty much anywhere in the U.S. or western Europe.....for a start.

Don't remember the last time I saw dead carcasses, bodies, people bathing and defecating routinely in the Mississippi River or the Hudson or anywhere else.

it's the shit you don't see that is more worrisome.

Why the fuck did you revive the post with such a worthless question? seeking attention much? and why the Fuck do you care? There are close to 200 counties in the world and except for the to 10% every single country is probably the same or even worse. They only reason you see this in pictures is because its a free country and anybody can come in and do anything they want. including taking pictures. If they tried doing this in another country, specially close to their religious structure, they would be put in jail for their miserable excuse of life and ass r@ped every day. These so called "journalists" need a life and so do you, stop trolling.
