Energy, industrialization, etc etc. India's major cities are a joke, I went there a while back and first thing you smell walking out the departure area is piss, while being hoarded by beggars trying to carry your luggage

I have some friends who visited there. At one point, they were at a hotel that was being built; said that the workers would just shit on the floor in the bathrooms - they didn't use the toilets, or apparently even know what the toilets were. They both enjoyed their trip, and were disgusted by a few parts of their travels.

Yes, they do. However, this is a bit different than not being able to find still (non-carbonated) water in France or Germany. We are talking about basic hygiene and sanitation here. Defecating in the street and bathing in a river that has human and animal corpses floating by is unsanitary and encourages the spread of diseases such as cholera and dysentery, which the 1st world has done away. So, yes it is "different" in India. It is not necessarily "wrong", but it is hard to argue that the way they live doesn't pose a threat to public health

He actually mention the Ganges river and how the Monsoons didn't come this year and it's considered bad luck (I think that's what he said). He also mentioned the piles of garbage people have to leave in centralized areas because garbage collection isn't regular. It gets to 45C in the shade, yikes that's hot.

But he also said that India is a lot richer then people think because half their economy is underground, cash only.

He told me you can buy a car there for $2500 but people won't buy it because it doesn't give them status.

personally i think they're 99% beggars but I didn't tell him that.

Ridiculous pace of attempting to become a modern economy, with a country whose infrastructure growth can't keep up, and with an already extremely ingrained ghetto with tons of poor people with limited ability to move upward will do that.
