I thought it was Jacky Chan that started the double eye lid surgery craze for Asians?

Most of my friends, everyone in my family, including myself are born with double eye lids... but there are alot of Asians that are not.

One really popular procedure is the "double eyelid."

I think it's really creepy. For starters, unlike say a tanning bed, or like even a boob job or botox or whatever else people in the USA do, the double eyelid is in no way related to fertility (big breasts actually are kind of related to fertility, deep down) or health (good skin) or strength (steroids), etc.

Double eyelids are like, racial attributes. And they're so minor that no one is really going to notice IMO.

Why do Koreans do this ridiculous surgery? Honestly, boob jobs make more sense than double-eyelid surgery.

Well, as a Korean who grew up over there until 18 and still has active connection/communication through people in Korea, I can confirm it's a little too much over there. Many Koreans in Korea agree to that.

But on the other hand, there is literally nothing much you can do about it due to social reason.. If you are ugly, unless you have a proven record of accomplishment in your career or education (like you graduated top-ranked college), you cannot get the job. Why? Because you have to put your photo on your resume and job application! If you are ugly with no great background, sorry, you are failed at the first round. It's more of social issue that makes people do plastic surgery over there unlike in US that is very personal to get plastic surgery.

Just discovering this thread and so this is probably a ressurrect...

But like, in the USA, any company that pulled shit like that would quickly be sued to hell.

Guess that's not the case in Korea, eh?

Boobs -> fertility, western looks -> success? That's a biological factor too, no more no less than strenght or fertility. If according to korean eyes, the fittest is not the most fertile or strong but the most caucasican-looking, then it's not really different. It all comes down to chance of survival and reproduction, whatever the physical marker of this is.

It appears also that like some people use some sort of...glue...to give themselves double eyelids. Except you have to apply it every day.

Kinda punctures the excuse that it's done to make the eyes bigger.

Lately I went on a K-pop tear. Like, it is a genuinely impressive thing that they've done with the music. But then I tried to like...get to know...the singers better.

And I couldn't I honestly couldn't tell them apart from each other, despite my best attempts to.

They all looked exactly the same. There was like no way to figure out a distinguishing characteristic. This was for the group T-ara.

Putting photo on resume and discriminating based on it isn't only in Korea.

My fiancee worked internationally a lot. She was in Mexico for few years and she said that they do the same thing.

The Mexicans also discriminate based on those tall 'white' Mexicans and those typical short & small-statured Mexicans.

I've been wondering if maybe throughout the years I have been operating on the logic. Maybe I do treat people w/o double eyelids worse, even subconsciously?

But as my OP explains, much of plastic surgery is related to constructing an appearance of health. So like, smooth skin is a sign of a healthy person. Big breasts a sign of fertility. Fat removal is about appearing fit.

But like, the little fold in the eyelid is in no way related to better fertility or heath. It's simply a racial marker.

You're overanalyzing it. Nose jobs (even in the US) are more popular than double eyelid surgeries, but they're no way related to better fertility. How do you explain that in your logic? People just want to enhance their looks which lead to better reproductive chances.
