So I just finished putting together my PC and turned it on and everything is working fine (after a fixed a few things).. but then I started to realize how frickin loud it is.

I can't even HEAR my heatsink (Zalman 7000 Al-Cu) but something in that direction is making noise and it really sounds to me like it's that little fan on top of the motherboard. But how could such a little thing make so much noise? And if it is, I'm assuming there is nothing I can do about it.

I've got an AMD 3500+
Zalman 7000 Al-Cu
MSI K8N Neo2
6800 GT

Its definitly the 6800. That video card is very loud. You would be surprised how loud those mothboard fans can be. After all, there run at very high RPM's.

Are you running any case fans?

Could be your power supply aswell. What kind do you have?

I'm running 2 120MM case fans.

I've got the GT on it's own line but I'm using the power supply that came from the box though, is that alright? Instructions say it's for other devices but I'm using a PSU cable plugged into it and then then that cable plugged into the GT with no other connections on either line.

My PSU is an Antec NeoPower... which is pretty quiet so far.

what case do you have? some cases are horrible when it comes to trapping in sound. still, it's gotta be one of your fans causing all that racket, and i think it's the video card fan.

My GT has never been all that loud. The fan is thermally controlled, so it only gets noisy when gaming.

Heard this was really bad for the PSU. Especally cheaper PSU's (not in this case, but still).

Search it up on SilentComputing Forums.

switch to panaflos, to my best knowledge they push most amount of air for the same amount of noise generated.

I have some Panaflo L1A's, which run ~26CFM at 24dBA. I have some cheap ($2) 80mm LED fans from SVC that push ~30CFM at I think 28dBA, yet they are quieter than the L1A's. Same with the Vantec Stealth's, they aren't really quiet at all.

I have the 6800GT, 3500AMD and the MSI NEO2 Plat set up. I am using a Xdeamer2 case.

Its pretty quite. The only real noise i hear is the fan ontop of the case. and my old DVD rom drive seeking when i put a CD in. Other then that its pretty good.

The noise from the 120mm's doesn't bug me though.. it's just that damn GT that insanely loud.

I guess there's nothing to do about it though.

I was going to buy a Panaflo 120MM to put in the back of my case... but that's going to wait right now.

Then what the hell is causing this? My case might let a lot of noise escape (LL V1000) but not this much... the videocard is just loud.

OK I looked - didn't see in the forums. Are you talking about some crazy thing like this:
# How do you get 7 volts out of the 12 and 5 volts supplied by the Yellow Black Black Red Molex connector you ask?
You use the yellow 12v wire as the power connector to the fan and use the red 5v connector as the fan ground. The fan sees the potential difference between the 12v and the 5v so is run at 7 volts. Fans can be run at 5v but some will fail to start and air flow is low. 7v is a 40% improvement over 5v. For more on the ATX power supply and how to get various voltages from 1.7v to 24v, click here.
(- that is from http://www.7volts.com/quiet.htm)

</a>

I would not recommend that method either. Use an inline resistor or a rheostat if the fan won't start/run at 7 volts. Alot of fans run fine with 7 volts nowadays, like this 120 panaflo
Might want to check though.

My motherboard chipset heatsink fan sometimes starts to make an awful whine - especially if I've got it laid down on its side. It's really annoying but it goes away after a while. It's a Abit IC7-MAX3.

Do you have windows installed and the video card drivers installed? I know with my 6800u, it starts up really loud then once the computer boots into windows and the vid card driver gets loaded, the driver controls the fan speed and it gets much quieter.

I also have a Zalman 7000AlCu and a 6800 Ultra and the the 6800 makes a terrible racket whereas the HSF is silent. I am just about to look into ways of silencing the GPU fan. So far there is the artic cooling VGA silencer NV5, Zalman are supposed to be bringing out 6800 compatible version of their quiet gpu coolers however if it is like the others it will not be compatible with your case as they aren't with mine ( v1100) due to the inverted design. And the other option I have at present, whch I am getting quite keen on although it is expensive is to goto watercooling.
