I know what you are going through as I got burnt pretty bad about two weeks ago. It hurt for the first two days, then the skin started peeling and now it itches. I tried all the vitamin E, Aloe , sunburn sprays and they worked for maybe 30 seconds and sometimes made the itching worse. So I asked the local pharmacist what to do and he told me benadryl. It works and the itches are now gone completely. I should have thought of it myself since I have a friend that takes benadryl because she gets hives sometimes and starts itching. Turns out the itching from sunburn is a histamine reaction , just like hives.

Some of the old remedies have been found to have a science background. Sunburn sprays actually can make it worse because they include drugs in the *caine family that are actually harmful to the skin.

Vinegar one of the oldest remedies, and it does work, is believed to work because it is an acid, which almost every skin cream uses, usually stearic acid, and it evaporates fast leaving the skin cooler.

And yes you have to apply a ton of it, very frequently. You need a larger quantity than you'd use for sunscreen.

i usually just go out to the front yard and snip off a branch from one of the aloe plants. straight from the plant works great, isnt diluted with lotion and smells friggin gross.

You need to find yourself a tub and take an oatmeal bath. I had sunburn last year over my ENTIRE chest and back... it itched like nothing you could imagine. I finally went to the doctor and took his recommendation for oatmeal bath... instant and fucking incredible relief.

Aloe itself is useless as a sunscreen, it is included in sunscreen lotion in small amounts for the most part because people like seeing it on the bottle..

I know that. I'm saying that people tend to use a small amount of sunscreen, just enough to rub it into their skin until it disappears. They tend to use a similar amount of aloe, but you need more than that. I'm not saying you should use aloe as a replacement for sunscreen, just comparing the amount of aloe you should use vs. the amount of sunscreen you normally use.

Basically all I'm saying is if you normally use, say, 25 mL of sunscreen on yourself, you'll have to use like 50 or 75 mL of aloe on yourself.

That's the worst man. I went through the exact same situation a few months ago and it was terrible. The best thing you can do really is apply tons of aloe vera beforehand and be consistent with that. About 2-3 days after the burn and taking a shower the itching was uncontrollable and extremely painful. I had to miss school that day it was so bad...good luck man.

Edit: And of course this would happen right when I need to go to sleep.

Sun burn is the worst. I got burned BAD when I was in las vegas. I sat out by the pool in the afternoon sun for hours. It hurt so bad.... in the mornings I could barely stand to walk. I am still peeling on my arms 4 weeks later. My arms were last as they were already tan so they didnt want to peel.

whenever i get burnt i get horrible itching if it's on my chest and back. it feels like there are thousands of spiders crawling on me then they all decide to bite at the same time. This happens roughly every 3 seconds for 48 hours or so. i'm pretty useless. I haven't found anything that works to soothe it other than heavy drinking and unconciousness.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: OATMEAL BATH. You will never know such instant and incredible relief for anything ever again.

let's see if I understand this.

You got sunburned and then you took a hot shower. Now you are in agony.

Have I summed it up correctly?

solution:

1. take colder showers. it really does help.

2. slather Noxzema all over your burns.

3. try to relax and maybe take an Advil for the pain.

Pain's gone unless I rub/scratch it. It just itched like hell. Think your standard mosquito bite x10 popping up at random locations all over your back every few seconds. Thankfully it subsided overnight.

I took a hot shower because I read this was a histamine problem. Hot water opens up the various pores of the skin, releasing said histamine in insect bites. I'd already tried 3 other methods at the time, so I was getting kinda desperate. It felt damn good while I was in the shower.
