I have dealt with a number of child porn cases as both a prosecutor and defense attorney. In general child porn defendants tend to be highly intelligent and often very computer-savvy. Actually when I was stationed at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma, the base webmaster, a senior civilian employee, was busted for distributing child porn using his government computer.
There really isn't a "type" of person who is involved with child porn in any way that would be discernible to anyone but themselves. In most cases they were molested as kids and effectively had their hard wiring in sexual matters changed by that experience. There are also people who, for whatever reason, develop an interest in this as an outgrowth of a general interest in pornography, because it is intrinsically more "extreme" than other kinds of porn.
I have unfortunately had to see some very very graphic images of child pornography involving adult/toddler sexual acts as part of doing my job, and it's something that really sticks with you - it's haunting to have those images rattling around in your head.
I can't imagine the tremendous emotional strain on the people that work at the DOJ computer crime division or any of the law enforcement divisions tasked with investigating this stuff. Their job is literally to look at this horrific stuff all day and ferret out these monsters. Just reading the indictment and investigating affidavit of what our semi-neighbor did made me want to punch the wall. Having to actually watch that stuff would really drain any humanity I have left.
