I didn't recognize his name, but looking up his Wikipedia page the guy seemed like quite a badass to me, and there's definitely something interesting about a Hitler-beloved German SS member being recruited by Mossad, so thanks for posting this op!!!!!!!!!
Fixed.

That is really surprising, to me anyway. I recognize the name as the Nazi commando who lead the Mussolini rescue mission but I'm also a reader of history, especially military.

I'm part of the 1% that knew who he was, but I'm a huge WWII military buff that knew of the Wilhelm Gusloff maritime disaster when the librarians were chatting about it yesterday. They looked at me, jaws hanging, like I had just solved the German 'Enigma' code machine
Reading the thread title, I thought that Skorzeny was being presented as a double agent, and I knew that damn well was not correct, but then I did know that he was recruited by Mossad well after the year.

Hell, numerous German scientists (and members of the SS) based in Peenemunde were brought to the US and given full pardons and asylum for helping get our Saturn rocket program going - http://www.pbs.org/wnet/secrets/wernher-von-braun/101/

Edit: Skorzeny was that good at what he did, and that important to Hitler, that he was placed in charge of 'Operation Greif', the infiltration well behind enemy lines by commandos dressed as Americans and Brits - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Greif

I always thought he was the inspiration for Oberst Steiner, played by Michael Caine in The Eagle Has Landed, a movie I've loved since I was a kid. Anyone who is into WW2 history knows who the guy is; his nabbing of the arrested Mussolini from that castle-like hotel was kind of epic. He and his guys were ruthless fighters, and tough as nails. IIRC, he promised der Fuhrer he would rescue and deliver Il Duce personally, and did so even though there wasn't really room on the getaway plane (Stork?) for three. They almost crashed at take off from being too heavy.

For awhile I thought Nebor had Skorzeny as his avatar. That was years ago, I forget what he told me...

Anyway, count me among the surprised. I can see Israel later employing Wehrmacht who fought for Germany and not Hitler, but I had read that Skorzeny was an ardent Nazi, big fan of the 3rd Reich the nut leading it. He must have been very attractive to Mossad to have not been sent to prison or the gallows. Not really too different than the US and Russia using Nazi scientists for their space program when you think about it, see Werner von Braun. He was in the fucking SS!

I saw a really good documentary on him the other day actually, History Channel had a great series of different raids that they put out 20 years ago. He was in the SS and died a diehard Nazi. He was a Mossad agent??

Edit: This is the series. Put out in 2001 so I was off a little bit, but still back when HC was worth a damn.

Yup.

Makes me think of when we jumped into WWI and started cleaning house, they learned to hate the American affinity for 12-gauge buckshot. Someone issued an order that any American caught with one of those nasty shotguns should be executed on the spot.

Funny shit coming from those who routinely used mustard gas on people! They didn't follow through with it, but it's still odd.

LOL

Not even British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery was exempt from Skorzeny's commando paranoia. Upon hearing of Eisenhower's confinement, Montgomery took off in his staff car towards Malmédy to increase his own prestige among American troops. Little did he know that a rumor had been spread in the Ardennes that one of Skorzeny’s commandos looked strikingly similar to Montgomery and had identified himself as such at several American checkpoints. When American guards halted his car at the first checkpoint, Montgomery told them that he would not put up with such nonsense and ordered the driver to keep going. The guards angrily shot out his tires and dragged the field marshal to a nearby barn where he was detained for several hours. Montgomery was enraged and called for the court martial of the American privates if they did not release him. He was also insulted that they did not recognize him after the guards demanded his identification. He was only released after a British captain known to the Americans properly recognized the fuming field marshal. An amused Eisenhower got great pleasure from the incident, saying this was the best thing for which Skorzeny had ever been responsible.
