I would have also liked to see some more gaming tests (since it's marketed as a gaming monitor) at various resolutions... For example, for flight simulation (IL-2 Forgotten Battles), one of the best combos for IQ and speed is 1024 x 768 at 4X AA... I would love to know how this looks and ghosts (or doesn't).

Q: When this monitor is run at another resolution other than 1600 x 1200, and not a multiple of 1600 x 1200, does the (interpolated) image fill the entire screen? I got confused about the way the image can be viewed with black borders/auto adjust... Can someone help sort this out?

Auric: No. I'm pretty sure its a 16ms panel. Both Dell and LGPhilips LCD confirmed it.

If I move the cables out of the holster, there is no problem with the pivot. It defeats the purpose of the holster though.

Kristopher,

You say that retail sales won't start for a couple weeks, but the preview article seems to contradict that statement with this quote:

"Although these units will not be available for retail sales until Q1'04, ..."

By "couple" do you really mean about two weeks? Or is sometime in "Q1'04" a more accurate date.

Thanks for any clarification!

Let's see here. This is probably the best LCD on the market right now, and Dell isn't willing to sell it to people who want to buy it. I failt to see the marketing in that Most people who will want this monitor aren't going to want to purchase another entire computer along with it!

Regardless, the monitor, its specs, and the review look great, and I can't wait to buy one.

Kristopher,

Thanks for the reply. That wasn't the answer I hoped for though. I figured two weeks was too good to be true.

Hopefully it will be available early in the quarter.

Thanks for clearing that up!

2. Running a lower resolution doesn't scale well unless you half it (800X600) on a LCD.

I thought it was quarter it. 4 pixels can make a square much better than 2

1600x1200 = 400x300

400x300 is old skewl.
Should be 800x600. 1600 the long way / 2 ( so that adjacent pixels share the same color). Same with 1200 up/down.

I'm fixing to read the review.

I just wanted to add that you can also purchase the 2001FP with other Dimension systems besides the XPS.

How about any other 16ms panels from LG.Philips or Samsung?

Anybody have any insight with regards to the question above?

If a game is very clear, no "jaggies" whatsoever at 800x600 on it I will order it asap.

Thank you!

Why would you want to game at 800x600 on a 20" monitor??

If your system cabn't handle the game at 1600x1200, playing at 800x600 wouldn't have any interpolation since it is evenly divisible. 1024x768 or 1280x1024 would use interpolation and not look as sharp.

Maybe the supplies are limited.

Just got a Dell flyer in the mail today and it said it would be available Nov 15th. Price is around $1600.00 Cdn. Gonna wait for more reviews on production units, but this is the most I've been interested in any LCD shopping.

I called today and spoke to a CSR regarding availability and cost. Of course he couldn't tell me anything. He put me on hold for five minutes while he checked with the "Peripherals" department. When he came back he forgot why he put me on hold.

Like the rest of you I am patiently waiting. This will be an early Christmas gift.

It would be sweet if they sent out some coupons or something. If Dell does send out a coupon within thirty days after purchase will they refund the difference? Anybody?

Just talked to NEC today at comdex. The NEC 2080UX+ will have the same panel but it will probably be considerably more expensive.

Kris, does NEC have an ETA on their monitor to the retail market? Got any pics?

only if the textures in the game can utilize a super sharp resolution like 1600x1200, otherwise you won't notice the difference

Just clear this up for me if you wouldn't mind.

I game at 1280 x 1024 on a Hitachi CML174 SXWB and get a more than acceptable level of performance. (CoD runs very well). However, if the native resolution is 1600 x 1200, running the latest games at this resolution is more than likely a no go, as my PC like many other will not be able to handle that. What does a flat panel monitor with a native resolution of 1600 x 1200 interpolate like when you reduce the resolution down to 1280 x 1024?

I wonder if it would be better/sensible to get a Flat Panel Monitor with a size of 20" and a native resolution of 1280 x 1024? Seems like going backwards though... :frown:

because of the faster response time you wouldnt get the "ghosting" when there is movement.

I think my 21" IBM trinitron can hold out til the next generation. I think they have made quite a few improvements, but I think they have a ways to go yet.

If you're gaming who cares about the native resolution of the LCD? Run it at whatever suits your system best.

Any dell LCD is going to have acceptable dithering, just think of it as free AA.

I do actually. Take Halo for instance (bad example I know as it's not representitive of most new games) When I run the game at 1280 x 1024 it's not really playable. However 1024 x 768 is, but it looks cr@p when compared to the native resolution, even with 4x FSAA enabled.
