From what I hear, Im sure the monitor performs great. What Im really waiting for is for Dell to allow us to purchase the monitor without buying a system

Excellent review

... and by the time I am ready to spend $900 on a sweet LCD -mid spring 2004 or so-, I would place money on the table in bets there will be offerings of the 20" 1600x1200, 16ms 24bit nature that will -hopfully- fix the small shortcommings of this otherwise excellent LCD

Exciting

Wow, it's only 900 bucks. Considering the 20% off sales that Dell often runs on it's LCD's and a possible 10% stackable coupon, these could potentialy be had for ~ $650. Now THAT'S a bargain!

I love to keep hammering you for more info Kris, any other LCDs using this panel due out soon?

How about any other 16ms panels from LG.Philips or Samsung?

hehe ... well the annoying autoadjust thing would really peeve me off, so hopefully either a) Dell fixes it or b) somebody else uses the same panel and "fixes" the problem. As for the analog problems, I could care less as I'd be using digital anyways; same goes for the very minor annoyances with the design of the monitor base as I would just fasten my own cable clips if need be anyways. More concerned with 1) performance and 2) looks of the monitor itself.

As for the slightly too light blacks and the rest of the "normal" small LCD annoyances, it seems this new panel has set the spec so far with speed vs. quality vs. price. Give it just a LITTLE longer and I'm sure all areas of this panel will be tweaked to almost perfection as far as todays LCD standards are concerned.

The things that bother me though, are the noted blueish tint that was noted in the review, and with LCD's in general the red reproduction which seems is actually a step in the right direction on this monitor atleast. As to how off the reds are, I'd have to compare them to one of my CRT's. Photoshop is top on my list for use.

Ok, I'm buying it. Read the reviews, minor complaints, but a good panel overall.

Now that the press release is out, where is on Dell's site? I cannot find it for purchase anywhere. As soon as this sucker is available, I'm in.

So according to LG Philips own data their (or Dell's) "16ms" spec is just a marketing spiel and it is actually 25ms? Oh well, as always the proof is in the puddin'.

Can't the cable insulator be positioned on the panel side of the cable guide so that it does not obstruct pivotting?

Why is the addition of USB described as an "afterthought"? Are there rough holes gouged in it with wires hanging out?

Vash, retail sales wont begin for a couple weeks still. You can buy it with the Dell XPS systems though.

Auric: No. I'm pretty sure its a 16ms panel. Both Dell and LGPhilips LCD confirmed it.

If I move the cables out of the holster, there is no problem with the pivot. It defeats the purpose of the holster though.

Sweet, thanks for a response. Buying it in a few weeks may not make my Xmas tree, but not sure yet. 16ms, 20", good color, this is a pretty good deal. This is, however, a first generation using all these goodies, I may way for second or third gen before I take the plunge. At $899 for a 20" LCD, its better than most on the market now.

Your spec chart shows about 25ms min and 100 max, does it not?

I don't mean move the cable outside of the holster ring thing but feed the isolator through before allowing it to drop down. I suppose a zip tie or tape or something could then be used to reduce the inner dimensions of said ring and prevent the isolator from slipping back again during pivotting.

looks good, but not perfect. I'm waiting to see what Samsung's response is going to be.

Auric, I thought the same thing about the review as well; in regards to the holster ring. I thought "why the heck is this a problem? just put the isolator above the ring" ... beats me; that and the USB as an afterthought. Although I think i might see where he's going with that ... as I thought it was kind of stupid that they put the USB ports on the side of the monitor ... would have been much better if they put them at the bottom of the panel in the normal viewing position.

The chart .. I thought it was odd as well it showed 25ms min .... with the SuperIPS mode; does that have an effect on the response time? It seems to me that to obtain the extra viewing angle that it would sacrafice response time? Can you turn off SuperIPS ... is it a feature built into the panel, or an extra viewing mode you can toggle?

Kristopher, how likely is it to actually be priced at $899? The price seems low, but I won't complain.

Chorner, Auric, I see what you are saying. If you feed enough of the cable through the holster to not snag when pivoting, about 6 inches of cable sit on the bezel. That just defeats cable management in my opinion!

I think Matthias99 answered the question about the spec's chart.

Jumpem, That was from Dell's PR. I consider it to be pretty accurate.

They answered your question about which spec chart but not the question of the discrepancy between the claimed 16ms (conventionally referring to typical or average) and the actual best of about 25ms (that is to say minimum time achieved or maximum speed).

It is annoying but less so if it actually performs well. However, your review does show ghosting/trailing is evident. Still, it seems to be a nice display and maybe among the best overall even if it isn't the holy grail most had hoped for.

Kristopher can you run a game (say UT2k3 or anything) at 800x600 max AA, AF, and everything? And then 1024x768 or 1280x960, if you have time.

If a game is very clear, no "jaggies" whatsoever at 800x600 on it I will order it asap.

Thank you!

800x600 will look perfect since the native resolution is 1600x1200. (4 pixels will make one bigger pixel...)
