Why do you think intel wouldn't have gotten the sales?

Some people don't care about desktop.

Either Intel sells X79 or those folks would just rather pass and buy a console (or whatever).

P.S. I noticed X58 is also built on 65nm. With that chipset supporting overclocking I would think Intel would be far less likely to approve the release of that one. (re: Intel would probably see conflict with high single thread and the new expensive enthusiast processors they want to protect.)

As I posted in another thread, don't buy the bare chip. Buy a whole system that contains the chip.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precis...102713?hash=item2a614d9c79:g:ua8AAOSwG-1WvgsC

E5 2670 + 16GB ECC RAM + 635W PSU + W7Pro COA for $450 OBO.

Drop in a GPU and an SSD, upgrade to W10 and let it rip.

Crap I should have waited and went that route instead of paying $120 for just the 2 E5-2670's. Right now Im stuck trying to get myself a single socket mobo for 200 or less. :'(

One thing to keep in mind about that model is that it only supports two SATA ports . For six SATA ports and 1P go with the Dell Precision T3610, HP Z420 or Lenovo S30.

Well... I have $140 sitting in my paypal - half-tempted to grab one of these, but I know next to nothing about what motherboard to get, or what ram they use. Can I use workstation ddr3 with them, or do they need ECC ram? Do the boards come in ATX flavors?

Too many questions, not enough time to research today.

I just picked me up a Asus P9X79-E WS Mobo pretty cheap to pair with my shiny E5-2670's. I just gotta wait till Friday for my packages to arrive. I cant wait I am so very very excited.I mean come on guys 8 cores and 16 threads is going to be crazy cool to play with.Wonder how fast I will be able to encode video with handbrake?
Thanks again Op for posting this thread cause this was right up my alley and exactly what I was wanting for an upgrade at my price level.

How cheap was that mobo? Got a link?

Edit: just to be clear, will any 2011 board take this CPU? I see a few 2011v3 under $200.

yeah dont do LGA2011-v3 thats x99 and what you want is LGA2011 x79. I would say no not all x79 motherboards will take Xeon 8 core cpus. its best to find a motherboard you like and that has all the needed options you are looking for and then google that motherboard and add the phrase Cpu support list after said mobo name. if it doesnt say Xeon E5 on that list then stay away from it. As for the cost of the motherboard I got, I kinda lucked out and got a used one from Ebay for around $200.00. They normally go for around $400-$500 new.Looks like there is still a used one left on ebay for $275.00.

I found an HP workstation board that supports the xeon e5 2600, and it also uses ddr3 ram. any reason to think this would work? It's the board from the z420 workstation.

It doesn't seem to have a name, just a part number:619557-001. Seems to be a c206 chipset. It looks like it has all the features I need and should work fine for my use with non-ecc ddr3, and fit in my case. I found a place with it for $200 returned.

Proprietary power supply connection (can use adapter) ..

For that kind of money you can do better.

Wait before you buy that mobo you better look at the power connector it looks likes HP is up to its crap again with proprietary power supplies needed like the HP Z800 mobo's. Crap NM Burpo got it before me.. Although I just found this adapter for standard ATX PSU to be able to be used on these boards here is the ebay item number

Went ahead and pulled the trigger on a chip. Gotta keep my eye open for a deal on a board now.

Edit: Sabretooth X79 should be compatible per Asus' website. I'll pick that up in the morning if it's still there.

In addition to X79, there's the C600-series chipsets - C602J, C602, C604, C606, and C608 - and the DH8900-series chipsets - DH8900, DH8903, DH8910, and DH8920.

The boards that are going to be interesting for a gaming build are workstation boards, and are likely going to be X79, C602J, and C602 as far as I'm aware.

Be aware that server boards can get really weird with the form factors, and often have a mediocre selection of PCIe slots (and leave things like audio off).
