Im not a huge fan of the Sabretooth series but from what I've seen and heard the X79 Version is a force to be reckoned with. So good choice!!

It means thousands more are coming to ebay..

So in your opinion, should a person purchase now or wait to see if prices drop or if better processors come to eBay?

I found a dual proc motherboard for $329 and 64 GB of RAM for $119.99 there. I figure for about $800, I could build a 16 core server with plenty of memory to do just about anything (I had planned to put ESXi 5.5 on it and use it as a homelab though).

Don't wait, buy now.. prices are only going to go up just like they did with the l5639 and x5650.The may drop a few bucks at first but then they will spike just like they do every year when sever chips hit ebay.I cant wait to grab me a 12core/24thread single cpu drop in upgrade around summer if they drop in price like the E5-2670. This is such a great deal right now for those 8core/16thread cpu's.The Op should change the Heading of this thread to E5-2670 Owners club so we have a thread like the L5639 thread but for the E5-2670 instead.

I think there's plenty more coming. Prices are good right how, tho higher than they were. The problem is board prices..

Yeah, some of them are pretty ridiculous. Seeing a bunch of stuff in the 300-500 range. I picked up a Sabertooth x79 for ~$200 - a bit more than I wanted to pay for it, but I already have 16gb DDR3 so I don't need to buy ram.

There's a couple Supermicro C602 boards that are in the middle stages of bidding, 3 days left and at a little under $100.

There's also this one if you're fine with paying 22 flippin bucks for shipping. http://www.ebay.com/itm/322011521486

Edit: In the $300-500 range you could also pick up a dual socket board!

Unortunately it means nothing unless the motherboards are also $70. By all rights they should be since the motherboards would obviously also have to be decommissioned. I see T3600s on ebay but they are $400. subtract the value of the RAM, OS, case, and PSU and you still have a board cost of over $200.

It would make sense, and you can actually find a ton of boards for the CPUs for lower prices but many of them are multi-CPU and/or odd formfactors. The demand is extremely high for ATX boards able to run them, due to the CPU's low price, and consequently the demand is driving board prices up.

Yup, April last year, I sold an ASUS P9X79 Deluxe board in the box with all accessories, and it barely cracked $100.

If they are open compute CPUs, they wouldn't run in traditional motherboards. They ran in modules that looked something like this.

Okay Burpo, you've got me convinced... I ordered 2 E5-2670s, 16 x 8GB DDR3 ECC RAM kit, and an Asus Z9Pe-D16 motherboard. I noticed in the picture the motherboard has a 24-pin connector for the power, and two 8-pin connectors. The problem I'm finding on Newegg is that I can't find a power supply with 24 pin + two 8-pin connectors. I don't want to buy a "server" power supply, like one of those long thin ones, because I'm going to order a Phanteks Enthoo Pro case for this server - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811854004

You seem to know what's what... any recommendations for PSUs?

I thought really hard about this, as I've been wanting to replace my FX 8350 that I use for VMs/video editing. The prices of the Motherboards are holding me back, $280+/$400+ for single/dual is just waaaaaaaay too much for me.

I don't game much (AMD 7850 GFX card), already have a dedicated RAID card, and 8GB DDR3. Is there a cheaper chipset that would let me run virtual machines on this chip without too many gotchas?

Power supplies really aren't your problem here. You have plans to install an SSI EEB-sized motherboard into an ATX case. Unless you don't mind cutting off a good sized chunk of that motherboard, it won't even come close to fitting inside the case you linked.

SSI EEB will fit in a EATX case. Its dimensions are exactly the same 12x13.. Some mount holes may not match up.

So, thinking about this, would it be time NOW to buy an X99 board to save for when the next crop (Haswell-based) of server CPUs flood the market? I've seen them for as little as $160AR on Newegg recently...

If I recall correctly some one in the L5639 thread was asking this same question but about these x79 motherboards a while back and everyone laughed at him and told him not to waste his time but now look who's laughing. We all should have listened to that guy back then and we would all of had some kickass mobo's ready to go for these x79 Xeons. So I say heck yeah "Denithor" buy the most kick ass X99 motherboard you can get for the cheapest you can and shelf that bad boy till next summer when those 16c/32t or 18c/36t Xeons hit ebay. For that matter buy up as many as you can afford and hoard them till the time comes to make a few bucks on the side.

Case info specifically says it supports SSI EEB.

When did the L5639 prices go up. You can still get one for $45 bucks atm.

I still like it better than the I-7 920 I had in the main rig a long time.

*looks at the L5639 and 920 on the desk he should just sell *

That L5639 for $45 is an auction not a buyitnow and the cheapest I see is $80.00 inside the USA the other 2 are $69 from china and $70 from Canada. Back when L5639 thread started I got 2 for $40 each shipped and now they are $70-$80.00 each.So yes they spiked in price and its only going to get worse price wise for that cpu.I had been bidding on L5639's for the past 2 weeks and making Offers to sellers trying to get as low as possible but I get out bid every darn time and the price is always at that $70-$80 mark.Thankfully these E5-2670's popped up at a perfect time specially for $70 bucks, well worth the wait!!

Hey guys I just got my 2 E5-2670's in the mail a few mins ago,so all I am waiting for is the motherboard to show up. it was supposed to be here yesterday but guess not till Monday now. So I was thinking I would like a new Low energy using Graphics card and Low energy using Ram.Any one know what Im looking for that could point me in the right direction? Im trying to cut my electric bill down as much as possible while keeping my PC on for as long as possible. It needs to be able to play 4k video though.
